Ok, for one, hands down this was definitely one of the weirdest films I've seen.
Think of "Wax..." more like a surrealistic story read out loud to you, with parts poetic and frightening but most oftenly disjointed and tripping wildly. (Reading plot summaries for this on IMDb is hilarious!)
So, this is the narration, all provided by one calm, but unhinged-seeming male voice, drifting through time, dimensions, forms and stuff, acid fantasies guaranteed.
Then there's the visual level. It also is superstrange (no doubts), but the one I enjoyed less and had some issues with.
For the imagery, we're left with stock footage, low-budget (VHS?) takes, rehashed old material, photos, bees (LOTS of bees!), BEES! and a mind-bending amount of visual effects. It's not the most coherent of film material you get here and I perceive it just to accompany the narration. - Have I mentioned the effects? We averagely get 5 per minute or more. And to be honest, they weren't useful everytime, having the whole screen become compressed and flying and all of that; moreover, they looked cheap. "Of course they do that, they're from the end of the 80s!", you could argue and may have a point. Zeitgeisty effects may have a charming component to the work. Unluckily, they rather distracted me from enjoying the utter whackiness of the "plot".
With the sounds, bleeping, bee-buzzing and sometimes seemingly random music pieces it was similar, but better: They ranged from creepy to mood-improving to B-movie trashiness and fit in such a bizarre production which was designed for the internet (!) in (1991!).
So, what we have here is truly bizarre filmmaking, a piece like no other.
Could I have it imagined better or more successful at its goals? As an eerier flick with more disturbing image, for example, with all elements which might appear too trashy/funny removed? Well, certainly.
Until then, we have "Wax or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees" as it is. And you should probably see it. 3 years 5 months ago -
