dombrewerA brilliant film - sorely neglected, it seems. Some fantastic acting from some familiar British character actors (including Leslie Banks, David Farrar), a very sharp, sly and often tense script based on a Graham Greene short story, and some superb night-time cinematography make a classic in my book. For a film from 1942 it's incredibly powerful and pulls no punches - the on screen deaths of assorted characters who attempt to stand up to the German invasion of the village is still powerful today, and impressively unsentimental. Highly recommended.
AaronPIt takes a little while to get going but once it does it's quite a quirky thriller. The Germans are genuinely intimidating and not the cartoon villains you might expect and the plucky villagers under siege make an entertaining ensemble.
Timecdombrewer - Completely agreed. This is an incredible movie, and one that deserves far more attention.
duchin6cracking film with very good acting, they don't make them like this anymore.
senorrobotoIn particular I thought the roles of the village women were very standout for a film of this era. Because it was wartime and so many men were off fighting this is reflected onscreen with women (and a child) getting to play the hero in a way they rarely got to otherwise.
ClassicLadyBrilliant movie! One does what one has to do to preserve ones liberty and freedom. I'm sure the great folks in the plane that went down in Pennsylvania on 9/11 fell much the same way. Heroes never die.
LimbesdautomneWar film with multiple characters about a real and credible threat during the WWII in England: the Nazi's invasion. Great film.
