This is almost a really wonderful Kaurismaki film, but it's just a little too cute. Also, Seymour Cassel is such a likeable actor that I just couldn't buy him as an 100% evil character.
I'm surprised this film doesn't get more love. Granted, it's not entirely successful; it's awkward at times and there are some superfluous elements that don't seem to go anywhere. But it's weirdly sad and funny and has some really beautiful moments.
The setting of post-industrial desolation perfectly complements the ghost story and lends it some poignancy, although the film veers a little close to sentimental nostalgia at times.
