This was great to watch. To see the society of African Americans in this era is amazing. Oscar Micheaux against tremendous odds directed and produced this movie. First African-American filmmaker. Way ahead of its time in 1920.

It’s definitely an important piece of film history and Micheaux deserves praise for tackling racism at that time, but I’m sorry, this movie is bad. The story and the editing are a complete disaster. The “twist” near the end is ridiculous in its execution; out of a mediocre soap opera. And the character of Efrem is as much of a stereotype as other black characters in movies of the same time.

Watch it if your curious, but don’t expect much.

D. W. Griffith ain't got nothing on this.
Despite some of its faults, it is still an immensely groundbreaking and important film. A must watch for any cinephile or humanist.
