Top Movie of the Month:

Honey Boy

A movie about parents stopping their children from losing their virginity during prom night is exactly what Hollywood needs. But in all seriousness, Kay Cannon took a very cliche topic and actually made it work. Blockers follow the stories of two sides: three high school girls: Sam, Kayla, and Julie getting ready for their proms, and three parents: Lisa, Hunter, and Mitchell trying to figure out how to stop this "Sex Pact" from happening. I wasn't expecting a lot of positives walking into a theatre, mainly because of the idea of this movie. I left the theatre laughing a lot more than expected. Kay Cannon directed the film to be funny and authentic throughout the scenes, like Leslie Mann's character of an obsessive mother coping with the idea of losing her daughter Julie and John Cena's character as a strong, but also highly emotional father to Kayla. However, although the film in itself was funny, it was also dragged out in certain moments. There were scenes where John Cena's character was constantly crying and worrying about his daughter or corny drug jokes from the kids felt as if they were rushed into the moment; not truly funny. Overall, it was a solid comedy and should be seen with friends on a weekend.

Second Top Movie of the Month:

Dark Waters

When we all saw the first Deadpool movie, we fell in love with the rebooted Merc with the Mouth and what Ryan Reynolds did to get into character for this beloved character. Word spread that a sequel for Deadpool was gonna be released DURING the after credits scene, and everyone was excited; myself included. I saw it during an advanced screening with my family and some good friends and we left that theatre laughing. Deadpool 2 is a brilliantly directed superhero comedy about our favorite anti-hero saving a kid from the wrath of Cable, a time-traveler who was trying to save his future. I had high expectations since 1. It's a sequel and those always have to live up to their predecessor, and 2. Marvel movies don't have the best luck with sequels (Not counting Winter Soldier). My favorite thing about the movie is the other characters in the film. Deadpool enlists the aid of X-Force, a team of other heroes (and Peter) to help take down Cable; the best two being Peter, played by Rob Delaney and Domino, played by Zazie Beetz. In terms of the negatives, the story felt rushed in certain scenes, and the action felt short and unpleasing, especially that CGI battle between Colossus and Juggernaut. Overall, Deadpool 2 was a great film and should definitely be seen if you haven't already.

Third Top Movie of the Month:

Terminator: Dark Fate

Black Panther follows the story of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman): the son of T'Chaka and new heir to the throne. When he loses his father during the Sokovia Accords, he becomes the new Black Panther and protects Wakanda. When a new threat, known as Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) challenges for the throne and the fate of the world, it's up to T'Challa to step up and stop Killmonger. I was really excited about the idea of a Black Panther solo film after the events of Civil War and how T'Challa played a role in that. I was nervous about how Michael B. Jordan was going to perform, but he was amazing! Killmonger had aspects of a villain that wasn't explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Movie Review for:

Last Christmas

War for the Planet of the Apes was directed by Matt Reeves once again and stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, Woody Harrelson as the Colonel, Amiah Miller as Nova and Steve Zahn as Bad Ape. This movie was sensational! As a fan of the original movies, I had high expectations for this prequel trilogy; and boy did it deliver! Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a great beginning to the story of Caesar and how it all begins. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes follows Caesar battling the humans and his own ape brother Koba, battling his realities. This movie not only finishes this trilogy on a great ending but shows Caesar and how much he has gone through and how much he has ventured. The story is incredible; following Caesar having to finish the war he never wanted to be apart of, while trying to protect his family of apes from a ruthless villain with no mercy. Everything about this movie screams perfection and it is my favorite movie of 2017. I laughed, I cried and I applauded profoundly. If you haven't seen this movie yet, first of all, why not? Second, of all, go see this movie and even if you have to see it multiple times to truly understand what this movie is, do that so you can fully grasp how incredible this movie really is. Andy Serkis blew me away with his performance and hope you feel the same way too.
