If you hear about this film, you will know if it sounds interesting or not once you hear the plot. If you don't find that interesting, go no further as you won't be going in with the right attitude. The setting is so different to many, but the themes are universal. So original. Now an all time favourite.
Great idea for a movie with two stars who would not appear logically to be in a movie together. I feel this is worth it solely for Nicolas Cage's performance.
Pure entertainment - up there with the original 'Superman' film. An arrogant james Bond like character gets given a large problem to solve and deal with. Along the way, the audience shares the feeling - drama and comedy exist together. I now watch it regularly just to enjoy the comic timing.
As a musician, I enjoy this film more. It is about ego, stupidity, creativity and bad management - just like the real music 'industry'. I will always be grateful it got made. I don't feel that way about too many others.
Peter Sellers could do so much with his face and in this film does not do much except inhabit the character - if you think that is easy, then think of how you would play a near idiot. Other people's guesses about him make the comedy so rich. It also says a lot about innocence.
A morally amoral film - once you know the reason why what is happening is taking place, you may feel it's all justifiable. If you do think 'I'd do the same', perhaps seek help.
This will always one those films that people love or hate - it'll either be too smarta$$ for you or if you have a dry sense of humour like I do, you may find it perfect. I have to watch again to listen to great lines that I missed - they come thick and fast. This is one of those films that Robert Downey Jr. made on his way back to the top and I feel happy for him that that happened - because of films like this.
Not quite a joke - still has good solid plot elements and not too much emphasis on gadgets. Bond is ruthless as are many other characters in it. I love the moody, atmospheric score which works so well it bleeds into the visuals, like it's supposed to, really. I don't feel that way about too many films.
I saw this at secondary school on the big wide cinema screen. What an experience - raw, bloody, full of great acting, cinematography and location work so that you believe it.
I like the amoral main character - the viewer tries to find a something redeeming in him and fails. This is like 'The Sweet Smell of Success' as it shows the worst in human nature and the cost of getting what you want. None of it seems like it could not happen, which is the most repulsive aspect of it.
Haunting, harrowing, heartbreaking - perhaps too much like real life? It is hard to find on DVD now which is a shame. You may reevaluate Rock Hudson after seeing this.
Worth it just for the line about the tomato - the lead character is a serious actor, even when he's playing a vegetable in a commercial. The comic timing in this film has to be among the best ever filmed - so many great one liners. Bill Murray's in it too - what are you waiting for?
This film and 'Waking Ned Devine' have something in common. Both are about small towns and people in them. Sometimes you want films to show you a world that is less like the one you live in and more like the one you want it to be - this is one of them.
I feel this film is lucky to be with us - if you feel inclined, read about what it took to get it made!
I will always love it - one of a kind. A musical horror film, a drama, a black comedy - I don't know which it is. You will bring your own outlook to the film. Avoid the remake.
A 70's film in more ways than one. An urban film showing the effects of living in a place that takes something away from people's souls - except one.
The director doesn't judge people - they are merely shown to the viewer. This is in the 'don't make them like this any more' category.
Great characters and story. When I hear the 'critics' talk about how this isn't one of the best westerns or isn't the best Hawks film I think...so what? Only a few films manage to be as entertaining and make you wish there was a sequel because you have loved spending time within its world. Wonderful. I have to watch it regularly.
Tragic, funny, beautifully filmed. Perhaps the lead actor is not totally convincing, but somehow that seems to work for the story, as the events that unfold seem unbelievable themselves.
What a film...ever wanted to get revenge on someone without them knowing? Imagine having a group of people eager to help you do it - all of them professional con artists. I hope to be watching this till I'm very old.
I heard about this (and Robert Mitchum's performance) before seeing it and the description sounded so intersting that I had to see it.I wasn't disappointed. I'm looking forward to the new Criterion edition of the film.
This has it all - funny, heartwarming, very dramatic, surprising . The first time I saw it I realised it was a new all time favourite. Just the expressions on Colin's Farrell's face make me laugh. It's like the characters themselves can't believe wehat's happening either. See it now if you haven't.
This gives 'art films' a bad name and I like those sort of films. Bored the hell out of me, hard to follow too. Also depressing. Rent it first if you're thinking of buying it.
