Generic and forgettable apart from an excellent finale action scene that actually makes the rest of the film worth watching.

Not only as boring and tedious as the Twilight films at their worst, this one glorifies and fetishises female suffering. Then the deus ex machina that resolves the plot is spoiler. Everybody involved in making this trash should be ashamed.

Can't really defend the quality of the writing, which is indeed terrible (you can feel the strain as the script tries to force events to move in the direction it wants), but has a decent pace, does provide some cheesy entertainment and there are some good effects. It also has an irritating habit of trying to cram in as many horror in-jokes as it can, which rather undermines the suspension of disbelief.

Consistently amusing, but the anarchic fun of the initial conceit isn't sustained: the consequences and possibilities are never explored much beyond riffing on Pride & Predjudice, and the ending is too pat.

Bobbins cockney geezer gangster film with some vampire stuff crowbarred in. Plot makes little sense and is full of loose ends, people stand around in rooms talking sub-Guy-Ritchie dialogue and the vampires are pathetic, and the film's rules of vampirism are inconsistent from minute to minute. Absolute pony.

Looks absolutely incredible, but unfortunately the script is bland and until the finale there is little excitement. Passes the time pleasantly enough, but it's not especially memorable.

In the same way that Insidious ripped off "Poltergeist, this plunders "The Amityville Horror" for the first two thirds and "The Exorcist" for the ending, along with any other films it feels like; one shot is lifted straight from "Drag Me To Hell". It feels really regressive, like a story that could have come out of the 70s period in which it is set, except updated with ear-splitting jump scares.
Many of the supernatural occurrences were over-the-top, and the effects and parameters of the hauntings were vague and undefined, with new effects appearing only to drive the plot.
Despite these, there were quite a few things to like about the film: the acting was good, the camerawork was well-done, achieving interesting shots despite a limited location, some of the jumps work, though not enough, and occasionally it achieves a modicum of atmosphere.
Finally, the claim that this tale, of multiple ghosts, psychic powers and demon witches, is even remotely a true story is insulting, and rather offensive in its suggestion that at least one Salem witch was genuinely a child-murdering satanist.

Semi-effective remake. A lot of the tension is good, but too many modern horror cliches, and a pervasive excessiveness, work against it.

Starts off really well with tons of cool violence, funky music, gratuitous nudity and general craziness, but after the halfway point it becomes a lot less coherent and less interesting.

Competent, watchable and well-acted low-budget ghost story, but not particularly original or interesting. Also... spoiler 4/10

I loved the first half, where the colourisation of the black and white world symbolises both corruption and maturity, but then towards the end it rather lost its way by making the colourisation a heavy-handed racism metaphor and having some cliched courtroom scenes. It's a good watch; funny, interesting, and often beautiful in the way it shows areas of colour creeping into the world.

Great noir. The plot's a bit contrived but it gets really tense and there's some fantastic noir dialogue.

Not quite a waste of time, as there are some occasional decent ideas, but almost. The film's got that glossy colour-corrected music-video look that all these remakes have (there's an endless supply of music video hacks who have technical ability but no skill at narrative storytelling), and it trundles around with bland characters and script, mainly interested in recreating the memorable scenes of the original. The tacky CGI and screeches on the soundtrack aren't scary, and new Freddy sucks with his cat-face and Batman-voice.

Not particularly convincing, and some decent scares early on soon evaporate as things get increasingly crazy. Structure heavily derivative of The Blair Witch Project, and the mockumentary ghost hunt format was done far better in the excellent Ghostwatch.

Dracula rip-off that is both tedious and confusing, with heavy meddling in the editing room obvious (15 minutes were cut out after screen testing). The twist at the end is silly and insulting.

Those mirror-demons should have known better than to mess with Jack Bauer. Polished, and towards the start it delivers some shocks, creepy atmosphere and a couple of good kills, but goes so completely over-the-top with special effects and action that it stops being scary (the poor CGI fire effects are particularly egregious in this respect). The script is inconsistent as to exactly what the mirrors have the power to do, there's little characterisation and it's too long.

Amazing special effects and action over a mess of a plot and poorly sketched characters. The good and bad parts end up balancing each other out and I just found this to be mediocre.

Very well-written drama that is genuinely creepy and powerful. Let down a bit by the limitations of 70s BBC budgets and production capabilities.

Very faithful adaptation of the 12 page framing story of Barker's Books of Blood, filmed in a relentlessly downbeat style. It has several effective sequences, but for the most part it's rather boring, and despite being so stretched out, motivations and plot points remain murky.

Mind-bogglingly stupid. At least it had a few decent gory deaths.

Anthologies of shorts are always of varying quality, but this varies more than most, as the alphabet premise means that all the shorts commissioned have to be included, regardless of quality. Too many of the shorts are bad, but there's enough good stuff in there to make it a decent watch. My ratings from best to worst: TDSL 7/10, UOQYXH 6/10, BIWVCA 5/10, PRE 4/10, NJFG 3/10, KMZ 2/10.
