Jirin, I agree wholeheartedly. Time should be no constraint, especially for a list that is gauging the most acclaimed films. It doesn't take long for a film to become critically acclaimed.
From what I have seen on this intimidating list, like 30% of the movies, I have liked a huge amount. I've noticed a lot of them aren't available on Netflix, which is a bummer.
Following the critical canon is really no different than following the masses. Especially when it comes to a website like icheckmovies where lists are aggregate. I do however, love reading reviews of films written by individuals.
I agree with you that taste in film is subjective, and subjectivity applies to all art forms. I disagree that there can be a "flawless" film, impossible in any case, there's no such thing as perfect art, it would make art as a whole pointless, every film is inherently flawed in some way. Most of the time, disliking a film is rooted in subject manner and content, not the actual film-making behind it. Obviously there are horrible films out there. But they're not films you're going to see on IMDB's list, atleast from my perspective. Which means that from my perspective, IMDB's list, while flawed, is in fact "good," whatever that means.
You make a point that just because you dislike a list, doesn't mean it's bad, and that's certainly true. But then you make it fairly obvious that you think the list is complete crap and that anyone paying attention to it is a film illiterate and a fool. I think we can all agree, looking at lists such as the IMDB 250, or They Shoot Pictures Don't They, can lead to some great personal discoveries. The majority of people today probably haven't seen a lot of movies on the IMDB list, let alone the TSPD list.
MaxS, you sound obnoxious and vain every time you write something. It's pretty retarded to say that just because a few critics like a film it's better than fan favorites. Most of the films on the IMDB list have something to offer. At the very least they offer entertainment, which a lot of the "canon" films lack. You can have the most innovative and historically important film ever, but if it's boring as hell, what's the point? Oh I forgot, pseudo artsy folk appreciate self-torture.
Way to come off as conceited while proving ulysses' point. The Matrix is a fine film effects or no. Sure, effects are a necessary aspect in the filmmaking, but that doesn't detract from other great aspects of the movie. Most films that are "just entertainment," whatever the heck that means, aren't based on allegories written by Plato among other influences.
Appreciation of film is completely subjective, as is appreciation of any art form. I've been around intellectual yuppies far too long, and had this argument far too many times. Just because critics and scholars say something is superior doesn't mean it is. I'm all for looking into to well-recieved films, but I don't read lists like they're gospel. I use them as a starting point for exploration. I've seen more than a few highly acclaimed films that I didn't enjoy in the slightest. Like what you like, and don't let anyone demean your tastes or tell you that you're wrong to like something. If a person likes Sátántangó, good for them. If a person likes the Matrix, good for them too.
I would take IMDB over TSPDT as well. TSPDT focuses a little too much on art-house, old films, and foreign film for my tastes. Not that I dislike foreign, old, or artsy movies, sometimes I find them hard to digest. Most of the films on the IMDB list are fan favorites, and movies that are basically cultural landmarks (barring the recent pictures such as Shutter Island).
