Even Herzog's turds (this is one) have moments of utter beauty and humanity, or if not that, new images. Both are to be found in this batshit piece of work. Herzog diehards only, lest you'll believe this man is incapable of making good films.
The beserk organ that opens both Van Morrisson's song 'T.B Sheets' and this movie is the perfect off-beat that guides this profound, crazed, hypnotic film. I mean, there's a few underrated Scorsese pictures, but this one takes the cake...did people even see this? Cage mesmerizes in that signature drowsy-yet-psyched-up way and his rapport with all his co-actors is magic, it's some of his best work. The whole film basks in a demented glow that represents the absolute pinnacle of Richardson's abilities aswell. This film is fucking pulsating, vibrating, pounding, brimming, teeming with genius and life.
A really wonderfully sensitive and quiet portrait about a man who directs porn for a living. This being a French movie, there is plenty philosophizing beside the (brief) scenes about fucking. Some very interesting points on pornography are raised, such as its artistic merits, its sociological aspect and the question if obscenity is always obscene. Besides that, the film manages to be quite funny at times aswell. Highly recommended.
Every now and then, somebody at Fox realizes that the X-Men franchise has the most amazing characters in the entire genre and f*cking DOES something with them. The last time that happened was X-Men: First Class (before they had to travel through time and shit). Logan is one of those moments aswell. Mangold and co have created a simple, linear narrative that puts beautiful work in builing the characters. All the rest follows accordingly. The result is a high watermark for superhero movies and quite simply an instant classic.
Nice exercise in absurdism, I thoroughyl enjoyed it. Steven Little never ever fails to make me laugh, his appearance here as an oddly dressed private detective that analyses the memories of turds is well, gold.
Weirdly austere movie that never gels together. There's no structure to speak of, characters are basically non-existent (and each defined by 2/3 lines of heavy handed dialogue) and it manages to both look like shit and absolutely gorgeous. It's self-importance is annoying and it's so-called statements quite trite.
Total classic, it's probably so overlooked because it's a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Eastwood never played a more immoral character and not even the smallest of girls comes away ethically unscathed in this story. So much Southern Gothic atmosphere you can cut it with a knife and damn, Siegel knew exactly where to place his camera every single time.
Easily Nolan's worst film ever, the filmmaking craft on display here is staggeringly poor, abysmal even at times, especially considering this film's pricetag. Both script and editing look like first or second passes. Not one scene seems like a logical progression from the one before it.
Man, Ahnuld was quite the arrogant POS in 1975. Even before being The Terminator, a multimillionnaire and governor, imagine his ego in his heyday; staggering!
He gives some fascinating insights in his interviews here and the entire subculture of competition and bodysculpting is well portrayed.
Excellent film, with a simple plot yet complicated and interesting characters who are not as they seem to be. The use of the then-new Cinemascope is beautiful. A must see for fans of the genre.
Crispin Glover's wild over-the-top acting in this film needs to be seen to be believed. He's oddly fascinating, like everything else here. A lot of the acting is stilted and fake but together with the weird aloof ambiance and spooky visuals this filmreally does gel together as a whole. Some interesting parallels to be found with the first season for Twin Peaks, which Hunter directed episodes for a few years later.
Just phenomenal. Truly an original piece of art that in it's own unique way represents the transition between the old and New Hollywood. Everybody should see this for that reason alone, it's like the missing link. I have never seen more expressive close-ups, Lancaster's blue eyes are as hypnotic as can be.
Blue Balls: the movie. It's just incredible in the way it dissects the power struggle between man and woman, and reveals it to be too deeply complicated to grasp. You can chuck accusations of misogyny at this thing all you want, they won't stick. Bunuel's ended on a high.
Awesome movie. The mix of cartoon-like humour and the messiness and liveliness that is Altman's signature is very strange and fun. Love how the songs are mostly mutterd monologues with music!
A truly hideous film. Shallow and pretentious. Coppola expects her actors to pick up the slack from her lousy screenplay, but there is only so much they can do with their quiet stares. The film pretends to be poetic and ''tender'' as I read everywhere else, but unfortunately it's anything but. Looks closer and you will see that it is at it's core quite cynical and problematic when it comes to racial issues, as in ''us and them''. ''Look, crazy japs! We can't understand them...poor us. WHAT DO I DO WITH MY LIFE?'' *silent stares and que ipod-shuffle music*. This movie is redundant and neither profound nor beautiful. Disgusting.
There's nothing like this movie. Watching it is like wandering through a maze of dreamlike imagery and intensely painful emotions. Can't recommend it highly enough.
