This is an incredibly beautiful portrayal of introversion in a post-modern world, the ability to exist in one's electronics, and the love of thought and understanding over physicality. It embraces a unique protagonist, and how he has crafted a relationship of consciousness that plays counterpart to his own. After watching in close proximity to Dallas Buyer's Club, it is a shame that Joaquim Phoenix didn't win the Academy Award for best actor, as he was phenomenal in this role. And Amy Adams was her usual great self. This was a surprisingly great film.
I must add that it is uncanny how much Phoenix looks and acts like Leonard Hofstadter from the Big Bang Theory.
It has a strange, "something-is-off" vibe throughout, and then the ending is sheer brilliance. Also, Britt Ekland's song and dance was the sexiest thing in any horror film.
It's a decent horror film. The cinematography is very much a reflection of the time. However, I think that a lot of effort was made to incorporate the full list of events that occurred in the book. Where it lacks is framing those events. I think there was a lot of material to work with, but the film could have presented the events in a way that created a progressively more haunting mood on the reoccurring themes
(e.g., the flies, the presence of "Jodie", the previous murders)
or dwelled on the events that stand-alone as paranormal
(e.g., the momentary aging of the wife, the black tar pit, the bleeding walls)
Terrible portrayal of an introvert, reinforcing the stereotype that if someone isn't expressive then there is something "wrong" with them and that they are likely to do harm to themselves and to others. It leaves viewers thinking the introverts of the world are "struggling" if they don't break out of their shell and play the extrovert's game.
If you really want to show the perks of being a wallflower, portray the introvert coming out ahead by thoughtful contemplation, a diligent work style and a strong moral compass while the loud and boastful extrovert jumps headstrong into mistakes. Then show the extrovert scratching his head in bewilderment at how his overconfidence was his own demise.
This is such a cheesy '80s RomCom that it hurts to watch. I was going to chalk it up as a caricature of the era, but it earned my downvote when
the otherwise sensible and well-grounded antagonist became completely irrational at a poorly thought-out and poorly executed revenge plot, falling flawlessly at every ridiculous turn
. This movie is going to remembered mostly for being the film that Shelley Long showed off her butt.
I am very surprised that this movie didn't garner more acclaim. The acting is phenomenal, as you would expect from DiCaprio and Winslet, but also from support roles such as Bates. The plot is also excellent, with a pretty spot on portrayal of
a relationship that clings to the hope of what was or the fantasy of what could be
This movie took a very simple story with a powerful message, didn't complicate it or draw it out, and the result was a great movie. Great execution -- a 90-minute story told in 90 minutes, without a wasted scene to dilute its point.
I watched it with zero expectations and I laughed my butt off. This isn't an Oscar-caliber film, but if you try not to take life too seriously all the time, you can be open to laughing at a few well-timed penis jokes every now-and-then.
