This has the fourth lowest IMDb rating of the 'Best Picture' winners, and came out the same year as Singin’ in the Rain (#84 on the top 250), which wasn't even nominated.
That said, I personally considered this an okay movie.
Lowest rated winners:
1. Cimarron (1931) 6.1
2. Cavalcade (1933) 6.4
3. The Broadway Melody (1929) 6.5
4. The Greatest Show On Earth (1952) 6.7
5. Around the World In 80 Days (1956) 6.8
City Lights (1931) is the highest rated comedy on IMDb (#46 on the top 250) , but wasn't even nominated for best picture. Meanwhile Cimarron (1931) has the lowest rating of any Best Picture winner by an embarrassingly comfortable margin:
1. Cimarron (1931) 6.1
2. Cavalcade (1933) 6.4
3. The Broadway Melody (1929) 6.5
4. Around the World In 80 Days (1956) 6.8
5. The Greatest Show On Earth (1952) 6.7
6. Gigi (1958) 6.9
7. The Great Ziegfeld (1936) 6.9
8. Tom Jones (1963) 7.0
9. Out of Africa (1985) 7.0
10.
-- An American In Paris (1951) 7.2
-- Chicago (2002) 7.2
-- Chariots of Fire (1981) 7.2
Animal rights is an important topic, but I was disappointed in this movie given its high rating. Disturbing imagery requires more context, focus, and finesse. This was not a balanced or deep look into how animals are or should be used for food and research. Nor was it at least edu-taining like The Cove.
If you want to see a dog get its entire skin ripped off its body like a shirt while its still alive, and then have nightmares about it for the rest of your life, then this is the movie for you.
I can see what's in it for him, but as usual I'm not sure what's supposed to be in it for the Manic Pixie Dream Girl? A painfully awkward cubicle drone. Hooray.
Hm, youtube has three chapters, but I suppose this check requires only "Chapter 1: In which we meet Winnie-the-Pooh and some suspicious bees", which is the youtube link.
I know the imdb link lists a certain video with 3 Westinghouse films, but you can't check this unless you watch all 21 films in the National Film Registry collection. (sorry rohit, no shortcuts)

Venomous anti-atheist propaganda. A cinematic Chick tract.
We can put this on a high dusty shelf with Birth of a Nation and Triumph of the Will, two other early works of embarrassing hate speech that movie critics like to gush about.

This isn't a bad movie, but it's almost criminal that it beat 2001: A Space Odyssey for 'Best Picture'.Movie comment on The Greatest Show on Earth

Mediocre and over-long. My pick for 1956 would've been Kubrick's The Killing, or Baby Doll.Movie comment on Cimarron

At least the guy in Validation (the other "heartwarming" short on the top 50) did stuff to plausibly justify an attraction.
