I didn't want to like this movie. I feared it was going to prey on my emotions as a lifelong New Yorker. And the title is just terrible. But I begrudgingly liked it. If only they gave it a more clever or subtle name, I probably wouldn't have put off seeing the movie for this long.
Kristen Stewart is the fairest in all the land? This was another one of those films that is poorly put together, but believes that high-priced CGI can make it into an enjoyable experience. Kind of like "Oz: The Great and Powerful" -- so if you liked that, maybe give this one a try. As for me, I want HBO to reimburse me my penny share of the cost to air this crap.
I had been looking forward to seeing this one for quite some time, but it was greatly disappointing. It was a bit too slow for my taste, the dialogue had very little life to it, and the plot was a bit too simplistic for a movie this long.
Perhaps it should have been named "The Not Too Bad Gatsby." The movie is enjoyable if you just accept a few stylistic choices at face value:
1 -- yes, they have used modern-times music modified to sound slightly more time-appropriate;
2 -- yes, they do hammer the core symbolism a little too hard -- the green light, the optometrist sign, etc. and
3 -- the text on the screen was unnecessary -- we get that Carroway is the narrator
My positives are: they stayed fairly true to the book; the costume design is spectacular; Leo DiCaprio is always good (and this is no exception); and Tobey Maguire was surprisingly good.
Pleasantly surprised. I usually hate Ben Stiller movies (with the burning passion of a dozen suns), but this wasn't the traditional everything-goes-horribly-wrong for Ben Stiller movie. It actually had a plot, and the cast ensemble actually worked pretty well.
