I struggle with articulating my feelings on this film. It excels in a lot of ways - Andrea Riseborough is a phenomenal actor. We must respect her more in our society. Her ticks, her patterns, her trail of logic as Nancy are incredible to watch. Also, she is very Butchy Femme in this movie, which is a HUGE plus for her repertoire of amazing looks. Steve Buscemi and J. Smith-Cameron work wonderfully as a pair of concerned but loving parents, hoping Nancy is who they want to believe. Buscemi really stands out to me as the perfect Soft Dad character - a side of him we don't see much, a la Willem Dafoe's role reversal in "The Florida Project".
My issue stems from the limitations a story like this presents. There are two limited outcomes - she is or isn't their child. While Christina Choe wonderfully uses subtle ticks to make the audience aware that Nancy is too deep within her own con to know the truth, I can't help feeling unsatisfied with the results. It's like hitting a brick wall after going full force.
There's no doubt that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an extraordinary woman. This documentary does a wonderful job of thoroughly covering her life, including her work as a sexual/gender bias lawyer in the 1970s.
This film succeeds as a dissenting piece. It brings for a call to action for women to be involved in careers they are very much worthy of, and for us all to work towards making changes in our government by being politically active.
The film falters by spanning RBG's life like a thorough Wikipedia article. It's safe filmmaking, which is understandable - their subject is an icon who is widely beloved. If the film focused on one singular event of RBG's life, I might have felt a deeper connection then just appreciation. For a woman of such high caliber, a risk like that might have been worth taking.
Oh well, that's a subject for another documentary!
There's something very enticing about this film, something that I can't easily sum up, but that I very much enjoyed watching.
This could easily have been edited to become a generic horror film, but I am so glad it was not taken in that direction.
Bridey Elliot's take on her fictionalized mother Clara - who strongly reminds me of Madeleine Kahn, if she was still with us and had a strong second wind of a career in indie films - is heartbreaking. She's isolated. She's surrounded by an asshole family who is too drunk to realize she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Utilizing family photos and songs from her 'happier' days in young motherhood, Clara has sunk so far deep within herself (mentally speaking, her state of mind could represent depression or dementia) that only a "ghost" can get her to stand up for herself. Kinda spooky, very dark, and even with it's 1970s aesthetic feel and aspect ratio, the dialogue between the family members is more modern than ever.
I wasn't even planning on seeing this film 'cause I remember Abby Elliot from SNL...and because my friend was on the crew. I'm glad I saw it.
I'm not giving this a thumbs down - as rileywatches pointed out - because of the cissexist/biphobic/lesbophobic/racist digs trying to portray itself as "humor"... I'm primarily giving this a thumbs down because the film looked like a bad senior thesis in film school. You could see the goddamn boom in almost every shot that had a mirror! The lighting was AWFUL and completely amateur. The eye-lines of the characters didn't match... these are big mistakes that a feature should not be making. I couldn't believe how shitty this film was, not just as a story, but in the actual construction of the film. Jesus.
Take a TV movie: is that a movie or a TV show? What if it was originally shown on TV in one country but theatrically released in another?
What about direct-to-DVD content? badblokebob
I'm talking specifically about television shows, not direct-to-DVD content (that's obviously a movie) or movies shown on tv and not theatricality (again, that's obviously a movie). I still have not made up my min on tv movies, personally.
quote:
Debate #1
*** Don't remove tv-series!! *** (already lots of pretty good arguments in other comments) but I think it would be nice and simple to seperate tv-series checks from movie checks.
Ex:
Feature-lenght movies: 2465 checks
Tv-Series: 110 checks
Short films: 145 checks
(other sections here...?...what did i miss...): 25 checks
I think It would accommodate everyone and it would be more specific also! (if we want to see the proportion of what people see) Maybe even seperate short films checks from feature-lenght checks. And also have a choice to hide tv-series or short (or whatever) when we're browsing. Oh well.. just thinking loud.. marco_n65
I like this idea. Obviously, I rather them not be around and this movie be only for movies (maybe including mini-series, but whatever), but if people really want to check tv series, it should be organized in a different way.
quote:
I've never understood why this website has tv shows. It's called icheckmovies.com, why are there so many tv shows here?? -satisfythecrave
IMDb - which iCM's movies are sourced from - is the "Internet Movie Database," but that doesn't stop them from including TV shows. I don't necessarily check shows myself, but it doesn't hurt to have them on here, and I think it's fair if people have particular favorite episodes and want to catalogue it.
But this is icheckmovies, not ichecktvshows. What IMDb does is different from this site. In my opinion, mini series should stay, but tv shows should go. They just clutter up the site. Aren't there other websites around specifically for tv shows to check? It just doesn't seem reasonable to keep tv shows around. The only reason people have them is to get more checks.
Oh yay!! I've been anxiously awaiting this day. I use this site so often, and a lot of the times I rather use it on my iPod then boot up the laptop, so I'm excited for this news!
1 - I use this site to check all the movies I've seen, when I've seen them, make 'to watch' lists of movies I want to see, make filmography pages of actors I really enjoy, and browse all the incredible lists of movies out there.
2 - Sometimes the searching for a specific movie is bad. Like with some non-English speaking films, the English title is more well known then the native title, and it can be hard to find the film. Also, there should be an easier/clearer way to report that a title or date is wrong.
3 - I've never understood why this website has tv shows. It's called icheckmovies.com, why are there so many tv shows here?? I can understand keeping tv mini-series or specials (a la Angels in America) but I wish the general tv shows would go.
I'm having similar problems like JohnnyDavidson. I can't update my About Me page and I'm having serious problems connecting my page to twitter. It keeps on giving me errors. I love this site but it would be great to know when these bugs will be fixed, thanks guys :D
It's a beautiful film. It's staged and shot so well and Michael Fassbender is AMAZING in it. So is Carey. All around amazing film, I was holding my breath and almost tearing up at some of the more pivotal moments. Really incredible.
I think many people will not understand Mavis Gray and her complex situation of being a jerk who doesn't magically break her shell and reveal herself to be a better person or becomes one over the course of the film. She's a jerk who remains a jerk throughout the movie and doesn't become a better person. It's actually brilliant.
I like the twist and the ending but the story as a whole isn't quite engaging. What kind of best friend makes a contact to each other only a day in a year?
They don't contact each other once in a year, the 'One Day' refers to the day they originally met and the book/movie focuses in on that day each year. They mention often how they spend time together and contact each other during the year.
I still don't understand where Tomorrow was going to take them. Also don't understand how Kee/Dylan was going to save the planet, but I really liked the movie. So emotionally draining but gold.
It's a decent film, everyone, especially DiCaprio, gives a great performance. It seems to drag at certain points, and at times the plot is a little difficult to fully follow. It's a very interesting look into the life of such a mysteriously looming man in American history.
My complaints would be that the prosthetic makeup made Hammer look like he was wearing a fake head and made Watts look like a zombie-fied Helen Mirren. Also, there's no way in the world I'd believe that DiCaprio was supposed to be 24 at the start of the movie. Also, there were a lot of shadows. Almost too many. I get that was the vibe they were going for but sometimes DiCaprio looked like his eyes were black voids.
Nonetheless, it was interesting to see a story incorporating facts from Hoover's limited released history into the film (everything from wire taps to cross dressing rumors). Wouldn't call it a favorite, though. DiCaprio's best biographical performance to date is still Howard Hughes in The Aviator . Not sure if this will get all the accolades DiCaprio & co are awaiting from the Academy, but it's still worth a watch.
Sexist, perverted, objectification of women, disturbing, Zooey Deschanel's manic pixie dream persona is in full form, et cetera. Just not good. And not even funny. Like, not even in a "so bad it's funny good" way.
