Started really strong and by the end it's hilariously bad. I would recommend a watch, but it's neither completely wonderful must-see nor is it terrible, write-it-off. A conundrum. Better than the sequels.
It's fine. It's about how some white dude took neat footage and made it all about himself. Your average nature documentary is far superior to this, but this is still fun and disposable.
Feels like he's trying to channel 90s Jeunet and isn't too successful. Taking the next decade to hone his craft was the right choice as he became THE director of the 2010s.
@LiquidSplitter Yes. It's liberal propaganda that a man who wanted to kill as many people as possible targeted strictly women in a Canadian college saying "You're women, you're going to be engineers. You're all a bunch of feminists. I hate feminists." It's, uh, pretty cut and dry from my vantage point here that reality is someone who at this point would probably be defined as an incel did this. And f*ck him for doing so.
I don't really like this one as it's just rough and doesn't really add any understanding or greater thought to the whole terrible event, but I will say the final line of dialogue "If I have a boy, I will teach him to love. And if I have a girl, I will tell her the world is hers." is such an amazing piece of writing that, even though I ultimately still don't care for the film as a whole, gives me pause and proves Villeneuve is hands and tales above everyone else.
@WanderingSocial is right. The singularly best sequence of the flick is ruined by a tremdously bad visual effect that looked like something out of a video game 20 years ago.
Looks great, but ultimately it's a war movie with a gimmick. Did you know war is bad?
In a year with Irishman, Hollywood, and Parasite, the fact that this is now somehow the front runner continues to demonstrate how behind the times the Oscars are. As great as Deakins' eye is here, it doesn't feel like anything new like Lighthouse or even Joker (or the even more frenetic Uncut Gems).
Oof. Remember when this was about the two of them adventuring and talking to each other instead of listening to boring people at a dinner table talk about "Really makes you think" level bullshit? Ugh. At least the first one was trying to do Brief Encounter. This falls way off the standard set from Before Sunset.
Much better than Before Sunrise, partially because it's shorter and more urgent, but also these people were the worst in their 20s. Now in their 30s, they're actually PEOPLE you can give a shit about. They've met each other once, but now they "know" each other, so none of the obnoxious faux intellectualism that's rife in the first one is here. This is a film about regrets but also the knowledge that time moves on. Linklater clearly got the idea of doing Boyhood from these movies, but unfortunately that flick is junk compared to Before Sunset.
One of the best of the year, easily. It's definitely built to be Scorsese's final word on mob stories, and boy does he ever load the film up. It does feel about twenty minutes too long but I'm not sure what you cut out of it. Pesci is a revelation.
It's ok, but it shouldn't be Mr. Rogers framing the story about some boring writer and his boring, movie-cliche reconciliation story. Every time Hanks is off-screen, I was wondering "why is the best part of the movie not on screen?" He's in maybe 45 minutes of the movie, to its detriment. Go watch last year's documentary instead, far more satisfying.
I'm not sure how outside of those who don't pay attention think that this film at all glorifies or yreats torture as an effective tool. It's 100% a fact that the US used torture to try and procure information, especially early in the process of hunting bin Laden. It's also a fact that this movie does not even hint that bin Laden was found with torture, as those scenes take place a decade before he was finally found. Luck and a lot of difficult detective work found the dude. The film makes this very clear.

Masterpiece? I don't know. But it's very good. It takes a good while for them to pull the trigger, but when they do, you feel it.Edit: This movie has stuck with me. It's a total and complete masterpiece.
