A constant see-saw between an actual feature film and an episode of Power Rangers. There's some parts I really liked! But it did not gel all together.

Castle Freak is very loose.
I think the 30min limit is set too high. After all Lovecraft wrote short fiction

Thank you for the comments! I have not personally watched Castle Freak yet. Its inclusion on this list is based on reviews / comments I found on other sites. My intent with this list was to capture films that were direct adaptations of Lovecraft stories, rather than films that were just "Lovecraftian" in nature, or films that used the name of a story but had nothing to do with the source material.

Do you think Castle Freak meets this inclusion criteria? If not, just leave a comment saying so, and I will remove it! Thanks for helping to make the list better!

Regarding the 30 minute threshold: I hear you, and your opinion is valid. It is an arbitrary criteria I chose. But, I don't intend to change it for this personal list. I originally wanted to just chronicle the feature film adaptations, but then there were things like TV Movies which were tougher to categorize, so I eventually just picked the 30 minute cutoff. There are a lots and lots of shorts, and I find them more difficult to "manage" than longer films. It'd be great to see the shorts on a separate icheckmovies list though! Either a list of just the shorts, or a list that combines my list + the shorts together. Please post it here if you make a list like that, or if someone else chooses to. I'd love to see it!

Thanks again for the comments!

Here's a few that were inspired by Lovecraft:
Dirt Dauber
Portal to Hell (2015

Thank you for the suggestions! Per the list description:

quote:
Films that were loosely inspired by Lovecraft and films that just contain Lovecraftian themes are not included. Short films (30 minutes or less) are not included.

Two of the films you suggested met the criteria: Pickman's Model (1981) and The Music Of Eric Zann (2009)

I have added them to the list. Thank you!

This was not what I expected. It's got a lot of good stuff going for it but you should know what you're in for. The back of the DVD box pitched this as a light-hearted family film full of hijinx, and it's...not that. It has some pretty grim depictions of a family living in poverty and all of the hardship that comes with that. The adults in the film are flawed, in a realistic way, which is a good thing, but also a hard thing. The film was very well shot and well edited, and like other commenters have stated, the child actors gave generally outstanding performances. I thought the tension was kind of flat until the last act, but the last act was pretty dang good! Tonally, though, this movie was pretty bleak most of the time. Life is hard when you're impoverished and this movie does not shy away from that.

I don't know what the other commenters here are thinking. I found this movie to be EXCELLENT. It's not about some "new form [of] racism]" as one comment states. It's not about the anxiety a black person "might" feel around "white liberals" and I certainly don't think that there are many, if any, "innocuous moments" at all! This movie tackles RACISM, which is more than just plain-stated bigotry. This is about implicit bias. This movie tackles the subject matter of being a minority in a society that isn't made for you.

This is an incredibly deliberate, intentional film by a talented director with strong command of the medium. From Frame 1 it sets up a tension that only builds, excepting a few comic relief moments (which actually work!), all the way to the climax.

I absolutely feel this film is worthy of all the praise it's receiving, and I think this one is going to be studied for years to come, partly because of its excellent execution, but also partly because it's a movie about the black experience told from the perspective of a black person, by a black person. That should be a no-brainer but I can't think of another movie that does it, let alone like this.

Oh, also: this is one hell of a directorial debut. The cinematography and sound design work, the acting is excellent, and it was scary as FUCK!

After giving this one a rewatch recently, I was a disappointed. The visuals are stunning of course (as you'd expect) but the narrative was weak and the characters were near-nonexistent. The world was great but underexplored. I love 80s synth but found it ill-fitting to what was on screen. But most egregiously, our main character had no arc. It's unfortunate...they really could have given Nausicaa an interesting path of character development. In Act 1, in the scene in her father's bedroom, she is shocked by what she is capable of when she is blind with rage. The story could have been about her coming to terms with this aspect of herself, and finding a better way to respond to her anger. This journey would have paralleled the nature of the Ohm, and provided a solution to the problem posed by the attitudes and decisions that led to the Seven Days of Fire. But the movie just drops it. She never again confronts her own anger. She is the same, perfect person at the start of the film that she is at the end. That's unsatisfying, as a viewer. Characters gain strength through adversity, and our heroine was a static Christ allegory from the start to the finish. Swing and a miss, on this one.

This movie was laughable. But a prime example of the cheese that was the 90s slasher film. So I enjoyed it.

I was curious. I like bad movies, I like animation...but noooooo. Steer clear of this one! TERRIBLE film! Worse then its contemporaries in every conceivable way!

Surprisingly fun. It's a satire of the "Reefer Madness" style of film, while sometimes unwittingly crossing the line between parody and source material. Some parts really drag, but all in all it's super campy and its jokes work. Recommend!

Just looked up Cecil Hepworth as a result of watching this short.

"the company went into receivership the next year. All of the original film negatives in Hepworth's possession were melted down by the receiver in order to sell the silver, and his feature films have been considered lost for many decades."

Good god, these are INCREDIBLE! A series of 13 shorts that vary from fictional documentary to found footage. The film, effects, acting, props, or actual found footage used look AMAZING. But what makes these special is their weirdness, their sense of other, that peeks through the mundanity of what's on the screen and is muddled by the double narrations before it worms its way under your skin. WATCH THESE SHORTS!

I disagree with the com commenters below. I thought Spencer Tracy gave one of the most nuanced Hyde performances there has ever been. This film is indeed a remake of the 1931 version, but the main area where it diverges is in the portrayal of Hyde. The 1931 film establishes the brutish, animalistic Hyde that we see in most protrayals. The 1941 version makes Hyde a subtle, manipulative character, less outwardly monstrous, but nonetheless abusive and fear-inducing.

The script was weaker in this one than in 1931, and Ingrid Bergman's accent was atrocious, but it really wasn't a bad film.
