I actually don't dislike this movie. Don't get me wrong, it's flawed and VERY messy (in every sense of the word), but there's a lot I like about it. The film's theme of dealing with and overcoming trauma is a good one to explore, and the movie does a good job exploring the multiple avenues one may go with that. The acting is decent, giving reliably solid character actors like Malcom McDowell and Brad Dourif opportunities to shine, and Scout Taylor-Compton holds her own as final girl Laurie trying to move past her ordeal the previous year. Obviously nobody can compare to Jamie Lee Curtis, but still.
Like I said though, the movie is flawed. There's a weird possibly supernatural subplot involving Michael's mother and a white horse (don't ask) that may or may not be responsible for whatever causes Michael to be so evil. It's never really well explored and just raises more questions than it answers and just adds this bizarre weird tone to the flick. Honestly, "weird" is probably the best way to describe the movie. It's a movie so weird, you think the only thing that could make it weirder would be if Weird Al Yankovic showed up... and then Weird Al Yankovic shows up (not joking, he has a cameo in the movie).
Again, this is a very flawed movie that probably misses as often as it hits, but I didn't hate it. Kinda wish the movie didn't adhere to so many predictable horror cliches, but still, it's a slasher film and sometimes you can't argue with what works.
Well-shot and decently acted, but pretty mediocre otherwise. By no means awful, and not without a creepy scene here and there, but it doesn't really offer anything new or particularly effective. Just a bunch of cheap, and mostly ineffective, jump scares.
I have nothing but respect for John Carpenter, but yeah this film is kind of a swing and a miss. Impressive scope for a low-budget film and not without some solid ideas and a handful of impressive effects. I also appreciate that the film has something of a quirky sense of humor. Unfortunately it's grand concepts just don't quite come together on such a low budget plus the pacing is on the slower side. Not a terrible movie by any means, not even really a bad one, just doesn't quite live up to it's own ambitious ideas. Still an interesting footnote in Carpenter's filmography, who would go onto to make much better films.
Well... there is indeed an alligator, so the title doesn't lie.
Jokes aside, the movie is actually very watchable. Bounces back and forth between an enjoyably gory B-Movie and an actually pretty well-made thriller with two solid lead performances. So despite some tonal whiplash, it's entertaining. Definitely among the better of the Jaws rip-offs.
Surprisingly good. Falls victim to a few overdue tropes and runs a bit long. Though a good cast and some great effects make it work. A solid, if hardly groundbreaking, horror film.
I'm a bit of an outlier, but I actually like this one the best. Outside of the highway pile up in FD2, I thought this one had the best kills in the series and I appreciated the tongue-in-cheek tone.
Loved the first Insidious. This one is... okay! Cast is still spot-on, has a few good scares and a handful of solid dramatic beats. Pacing is on the slower side though and the 3rd act raised more questions than it answered. Glad I saw it but not one I'll be rushing out to see again.
This one didn't do much for me. Has it's B-Movie charms and the gore is appropriately over-the-top, but found it a bit too dull to stay consistently entertaining. Has it's moments though.
One part sincere examination of toxic relationships and one part goofy over-the-top horror/comedy. Overall, the movie is pretty fun. It's delightfully campy and gory plus the cast is solid. Kind of feels like the script was one or two drafts away from being a great movie (awkward pacing, obvious plot twists, and some underdeveloped characters all hold it back) but it's got some good ideas. Probably misses as often as it hits, but worth a watch.
Somewhat entertaining but a significant step down from the first. The heroes are still fun, the expanded lore is interesting, and the movie got a few laughs out of me. Villains have their moments, but Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren are mostly on autopilot. Worst offense is that a lot of the strong character work from the first has been replaced by mostly stock storytelling. I'm generally glad I saw it, but the film was a slight disappointment.
Is The Bob's Burgers Movie basically a longer episode of the show with slightly better animation? Sure... but how is that a bad thing? I personally loved the movie! The characters, quirky humor, and lovable spirit are just as endearing as they've always been.
The actors are impressive, the plot is intriguing, and I won't deny that Ridley Scott's immense talents as a technical filmmaker are on full display here. Kind of a shame that most of the characters come off a little too stock to truly push this film into greatness. Still worth watching.
It ALMOST works, but not quite. Behind the scenes shenanigans aside, the movie is technically proficient and features a great performance from Florence Pugh. The plot, though, is a mess of convoluted predictable twists and half-baked ideas.
Olivia Wilde's previous film, Booksmart, was an excellent directorial debut so I was looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, she falls victim to the sophomore slump with an ambitious misfire. Hoping her next film is better, but this time it's a swing and a miss.
Very ahead of it's time for 1966. The film holds up phenomenally well. A creative, thrilling, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that should be seen by anyone with a remote appreciation for quality filmmaking. .
Worth watching for the surreal tone and David Bowie's compelling screen presence. The pacing and oddly structured storytelling can be a little grating, but I'm glad I saw it.
A decent but very uneven thriller. It benefits from some solid thrills, a few very suspenseful moments, and a memorably unhinged performance from Jessica Walter. Eastwood definitely showed potential as a director but he was clearly still learning (he did get better). Still a watchable flick, glad I saw it.
