I think of lynch's films as dreams where each scenario is played out without a purpose and as a display of the subconscious mind. It may not be pieced logically and the acting is intentionally unconventional/weird (some may say "bad") to support this idea of a surreal series of dream episodes.

*SPOILERS*
It could have so easily been about gambling and entertainment (similar to the entertainment value of watching gladiators die) which would have explored the evil and greedy nature of humanity, instead they use the "sacrifice for elder gods" premise, giving the people underground an excuse to carry out the tasks and turning this great idea into a boring and ridiculous mess. The very end was also extremely lazy and forgettable.

Good Idea, bad execution.

Enjoyed Ethan Hawke's performance. The use of sound was successful in creating an ominous and uncomfortable atmosphere and the plot was rather interesting as well. The end of the film, however, felt extremely rushed and lazy and left me unsatisfied.

Promising start into a mediocre ending. Still very enjoyable to watch though.
