Nice list, always great to see some appreciation for contemporary Asian cinema. Do you happen to know the user Onderhond? I actually had to double-check because this list looked almost exactly like his xD
I know this is a bit random on my part, but feel welcome to join the icmforum if you want. We could always use some reinforcement on the Asian front...
Definitely not worth the eight-year wait. The runtime is excessive, with most of it being spent on ridiculous family drama, the horror elements are laughable, and the jumpscares among the worst I have seen in recent years. Josh Hutcherson tries his best to save this train wreck but can only do so much, given the lousy script. He also happens to be the only one in the whole movie to give a proper performance. The child actors are horrible, and the rest of the cast ranges from dull (Lail) to cartoonish (Lillard). None of this would have mattered if the film had just fully gone down the "campy" path. Instead, it tries to be both a full-fledged horror flick, as well as a funny family comedy, which - surprise - doesn't work out in the slightest. The potential was there, but the studio's desire to appeal to the broadest audience possible prevented it from ever being reached. At least the animatronics looked good, even if they ended up being weirdly underutilized.
samoan is right, just watch Willy's Wonderland again instead.
Now that the hype regarding this subgenre is largely over there seems to be a small found footage/mockumentary renaissance going on. This one, "The Medium", "The Outwaters", "Dashcam", "Horror in the High Desert" and "Howard's Mill" were all decent additions to the genre released just since last year.
