One of my all time favorite horror movies, and the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. The acting is fantastic, you care about the main characters, and it genuinely terrified me. You can call the second half pseudo-intellectual and pretentious, but I disagree. It's a movie about pain and what people will do to justify inflicting pain on others. The villains have a motivation. The characters might be pseudo-intellectual, but not the movie itself.
That's why the ending is so effective. She realizes that what they've been doing is bullshit and completely unjustified.

Deakins and Glass do incredible work in this film, but it's a pretty standard biopic otherwise. Definitely one of Scorsese's weakest movies.Movie comment on August Underground

Not worth anyone's time. Watch The Poughkeepsie Tapes instead. It's a much better version of the same idea.Movie comment on The American

Holy shit that last shot. The kid is pretty good, but the poor writing and bad acting from the rest of the cast bring it down.
