Tied with the lost footage of Metropolis, there is no other cinematic gift I have ever wanted to receive than a newly discovered print of London After Midnight. I grew up with countless images, of Chaney in his great make-up and that sharpened grin, in countless monster movie books. The "slideshow" version shown on TCM satisfies, for it will have to do, at this time. There was talk on AICN.com, a couple years back, that possibly someone had discovered a print, but I haven't read a thing about it since. Guess not. A damn shame.
Roger is one of the finest instructors of the cinema. To listen to him talk about films he loves is a wonderful treat. He is also a fine wit, as you can see within his reviews of the lesser loved films. Ebert is a true cinema lover and hero.
