I found it to be a fun little cosmic horror story. You may see some of the twists and turns coming but I didn't feel like it lost anything as a result. For a crowd funded movie it was well made, fun to watch, and I'd recommend it to others.
I made it most of the way through the movie before I fell asleep. It wasn't easy but I made it most of the way.
I figure I should try to watch it again just to see if I missed something good. Worst part is, I went into this movie really WANTING to like it but...eh...
Happy to see a return to solid movie making. I know there are some who didn't like this movie but if you enjoyed M Knight's early work then I think you'll definitely enjoy this movie. Good cast, well shot, and creepy as well as suspenseful.
I grew up watching this film on a bad VHS copy. Spending my youth in Germany I can say that it brought up some very interesting conversations with my parents. It's ties to the comedy series Hogans Heroes are obvious, but it's still a great POW movie.
As a human being this documentary ripped my guts out. As a father, the scene with the little boy holding his father's bloody body, begging him not to leave him...that broke me down into a quivering, bawling, mess...
Wow...okay, so this movie has some great actors in it but...yeesh. They really shouldn't have tried to remake this. I don't know if this was just an IP cash grab or what the deal was but no one was really trying to innovate here. I'm not angry about it like some of the other reviewers but I do feel bad for Sam Rockwell and the other actors. They tried but the story was weak and the scares were uninteresting. If you're going to watch a Poltergeist movie, do yourself a favor and watch the original.
Not one likable character and it takes too long for them to die. Overall if feels like the movie is trying too hard in some places and not trying hard enough in others.
While the plot was not overly complicated, I found the movie to be fun and enjoyable. My wife and I got a chuckle from the various cameos by what seemed like a lot of our favorite actors. Sam Rockwell was entertaining in his role, and Clancy Brown as a preacher killed us. (The Kurgan is a preacher?!? LOL) Look if you want a movie where people are having body parts blown off from opening credits to close then no this isn't the movie for you. If you're looking for some pretentious Oscar attempt by (insert famous and/or foreign directors name) then this is also not the movie for you. If you want something that's fun and manages to blend an odd ball pairing of genre's then check it out.
What a disaster of a movie. I don't feel like Smith has really accomplished anything with this movie. I get that he's calling the WBC people nut jobs and making a lot of Waco, Texas references but...any message beyond look how crazy these people are is lost on me. (and I already thought of them as pretty friggin crazy.) The movie drags and then goes off in some anti-government rant. Smith obviously had no real direction for this project and I miss the days of him making movies that wound up on the Criterion Collection.
I really feel that it's inappropriate to call this movie an exploitation film. It's surprising well crafted and while the plot deals with race, it doesn't feel like the absolute focus of the film. The story treats race pretty appropriately for post civil war America. And while some of the actors are obviously amateurs, it hardly detracts from the film over all. This movie is an absolute must see.
