This is what I call style over substance. The script and story is crap, but the photography, art direction, costumes, music and all over aesthetics are top tier!
This is a slow burner if there ever was one. I mean that in a positive sense. I found the movie to be immaculately aesthetic, as expected, and entrancing in a suspenseful and edging manner. I must agree the two main characters could be described as two-dimensional, but I think they successfully achieved their purpose as vessels for the viewer to take part in the eerie narrative. I paid no mind to Walken's accent. He pulls of his character flawlessly, as he usually does.
What a waste of opportunity this movie is! Shitty script. Why bother to make an apocalyptic disastermovie and then fill it with 70% totally implausible other random disasters? As if there is not enough script material for tension and action in an "extinction level event" itself...
This was a nice surprise for me! Definitely one of the movies you enjoy more if you skip the trailer and don't know much about the plot beforehand. Easy and confident little thriller with a refreshing touch of dark humor.
I like how the movie uses sea shanties to set the mood for new chapters in the plot!

What a cultural treasure! Best movie I have ever seen on the subject, and a lot of new footage and music.
