I once had a gall bladder stone and had to stay in the hospital for more than a week. The pain was so excruciating I couldn't lie down properly for the first 4 days. I also had to share a room with an older gentleman who kept wanting to tell me about the carrots he had been trying to grow in his yard for the past year. Watching this "movie" made me yearn for those days. 1001 MYMSBYD, TSPDT, and Sight&Sound can go fuck themselves.
In addition to being exceptionally unfunny and poorly acted, it also has insane structural issues. It feels like a mini-series compressed into one film; it has several dramaturgical beginnings and endings as well as countless non-sequiturs. At one point I felt for sure the movies was ending, only to discover I was just an hour into it. An absolute shitshow.
This is ham-fisted Oscar bait at its worst. It's a Danish short nominated for an Academy Award, so I wanted to like it but holy hell, is it just sappy and bad. Strange-Hansen has done so much better and should really be ashamed of himself. "Just fly, my love" - puke.
I don't know whether most of this movie was shot on a set or not. I would say, I damn well hope they did shoot it on a set, because shooting on location and somehow making it look like a set, is a spectacular failure on its own that I do not initially want to credit Branagh with. Set or not, however, the town feels dead and tinny. In most scenes, it feels very much like a simple theater setup shot. That is not cinema. The b/w cinematography is at both times gorgeous and amateurish. The cinematographer is an absolute hack that has no business working in the industry. There is nothing imaginative or inventive about it. Hitchcock did it better in the 40s and 50s and I'd like to think we've evolved in the past 70 years, but not in the mind of talentless Haris Zambarloukos who has done nothing of note in his 25 year career.
Just add a goddamn country list for Denmark. How many times have we got to win Academy Awards, Baftas, Palme d'Ors, and other highly acclaimed international awards for us to get a goddamn country list? 51 country lists you have, 45 of them less deserving than Denmark. I know you have two good lists, so simply merge them and make us a list!
Turkey already had a list, we just updated it. Which Danish list should we consider, Nuked? DFI is a bit old and Gyldendal's Guide seems to ignore the silents, but we do talk about Denmark regularly.
DFI might be a bit old and Gyldendal's Guide might ignore the silents, but you should be safe to merge them. I mean, why not? To my knowledge, it has been done before with other lists. Also, just like with Turkey's, South Korea's, etc. country lists, you can always update it when better and/or more recently updated sources become available.
I might add that the above solution has been proffered countless times over the years.
I would've forgotten which country had achieved this milestone in space exploration if whatever that guy was called hadn't said "One small step for an American, one giant leap for The United States of America and no other country, fuck you guys"
Really feel bad for Michael Collins though. Not only was he an Irish national hero, he was also in SPACE and they only ever referred to him as Mike, never his full name.
If you think that, then you must not have been paying attention. If anything, it's a condemnation of the US and its cynical and illegal operations on foreign soil.
@Ebbywebby
Nuked means something like this https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/100+best+danish+movies/nuked/
which is different from an award list
I do mean SOMETHING like that, but definitely not that list as it is terrible and made by a bunch of 12-year-olds.
A list like
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/dansk+spillefilm+top+100/peacefulanarchy/
would be great. It is inclusive and comes from the Danish Film Institute. See, I've basically done all the proper assessment, so now the mods just need to make it official.
Thanks for adopting my list.
Although I can't help but feel trolled at this point, as the SECOND Polish country list is adopted and there's still no sign of any Danish country list.
"Me Him Her" (https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/me+him+her/) is so obviously a troll submission. Barely anyone has even seen it, those who did mostly hated it according to reviews, and it's not available anywhere online.
The user who submitted the movie for consideration on Reddit had only ever commented "Sinn fein" on a bunch of threads until that submission. I'm not even joking even though it sounds so ridiculous.
I had a hard time coming to terms with just how bad this movie is. The setting is "original" if you like, but both story and plot are filled to the brim with Disney tropes. Why does the main character look exactly like the girls from Frozen but with a different hair color? Disney don't even care about animating new characters anymore!
It's not 40 minutes, it's 58 minutes - please can someone tell IMDb so they listen!?
They somehow don't trust me.
6/10
Not as good as Shoah of course, but it adds a few interesting things indeed.
IMDb says the 58 minute version is the tv version. If it were 58 minutes, it wouldn't have been eligible for the short doc academy award nom., so a 40 minute version definitely exists.
Also, to say that a 40 min doc is not as good as a 9-hour doc is beyond ridiculous. First of all, it's not trying to be Shoah. Secondly, one is about 14 times longer than the other. How would you ever go about comparing the two? Ridiculous.
Denmark?!? How about Bulgaria, Israel, Argentina, Colombia, Thailand, and the Philippines!!!
But this country-list mania is only going to continue. When Denmark gets its next list, then another country will say "hey, what about us?!? Don't we matter too? Why are we slighted by not having our great country's cinema industry represented less equally than ..."
While there is no precise metric to ascertain the importance and significance of a country's cinematic history, let me tell you, that Denmark, along with Germany and France, was one of the early movie industries. Nordisk Film is one of the oldest studios still in use. A great deal of movies were produced with Danish cash.
Further, looking at Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language, Denmark has won the most awards per capita. Same goes for nominations in that category.
And if you look at the newest TSPDT list, Denmark has the third highest amount of entries per capita, only surpassed by Sweden and France - though both of these countries already have a country list (France has 3-4, I think).
I understand that not everyone can be happy about every decision, and in reality, every country should have a country list. However, considering the significance of Danish cinema, it is odd to see lists of Finnish, Romanian, etc. films being favoured over a Danish list. Even Korean cinema has, essentially, three lists, on which 128 movies are on at least two of those lists, and of which 32 are on all three lists, giving a disproportionate importance to Korean cinema.
There is the awards list from Denmark. We may consider another in the future.
Like you said, that's an awards list, not a country list. Considering countries like Finland, Hungary, The Netherlands, Greece, etc. has a country list, there is no excuse not to give Denmark one. I've seen the poll on the ICMBoard - it's almost a year old. There are two good lists, it shouldn't be that difficult to pick one (or merge them).
