Stressful viewing, but in a good way. A kinetic, heart-pumping thriller through and through. For those who loved Uncut Gems, you may want to give this one a watch. Refn shows some incredible talent for building tension, and cutting it with shocking moments of violence.
Each frame in this film could be an old photo or postcard. The Patagonian scenery is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there is enough meat on these bones.
This one seems to be an overlooked entry in Scorsese's filmography, which is a real shame. It's a film with a lot of life and heart. Add in brilliant turns from Ellen Burstyn and Harvey Keitel, and you've got a film that can hold its own with Scorsese's gangster flicks.
With tropes in American horror movies so clearly defined, it's interesting to see horror movies from the other side of the iron curtain. Viy is a fun folk horror film with enough surreal imagery to keep you entertained.
This is bound to be a divisive one, but I fall heavily in the 'brilliant' camp. Visually brilliant (clearly a huge influence on Darren Aronofsky's 'Pi'), and with some well-used symbolism.
Bob Fosse is incredibly underrated. His films have some brilliant visual flair. Add in Bruce Surtees' fantastic black and white cinematography, and some solid performances from the cast, and you've got a great film.
I didn't know too much about the legal issues surrounding Lenny Bruce's career, and it's easy to say that some of the humour is a bit childish, but it's still a very compelling story, and one that can easily drum up some good discussion.
There is some real brilliance in the folk horror elements. i just wish that they had explored these more rather than leaning back on many of the tired old horror tropes.
Fever dream is right! It may be difficult to grab hold of the narrative, but the visual brilliance and compelling dialogue will keep you hooked as you piece together the storyline -- and what a story it is!
A film that's more about internal politics between soldiers and officers than ti is about war itself. An interesting look into the dynamics and divisions present in what should be a unified force.
Apart from the brilliant sequence on the beach, I did feel a little bit let down though.
My main impression while watching this film is that Joanna Hogg strikes me as a very dull person. The characters, dialogue, etc. in this film are all incredibly bland. There is some interesting camera work, but nothing that hasn't been an established tool in the arsenal of European arthouse filmmakers for decades.
Early soviet film exploring a remote region of northern Georgia. It's a soviet propaganda film showing the benefit of industrialisation and the railroads for the previously agrarian society.
Kalatozov's eye for striking imagery and talent for montage are already on display here, so if nothing else, it is worth a watch for his fantastic filmmaking prowess alone. Beneath that, there is a compelling story, and a decent streak of humour running throughout.
It's not often that very private public figures become the subject of biopics -- even in situations where they wield enormous power and influence. It's even rarer that these biopics stray from the fairly stifling mould of a stiff recreation of historical events.
Vice definitely takes some liberties with how it portrays historical events, and does so with playfulness and irreverence. In the end though, it's an effective portrayal of Dick Cheney as a character and as a political force. It shows his naked ambition, and how he managed to exercise his influence from a largely symbolic office to loom large over the halls of power in Washington.
It follows a similar formula to the Big Short, and while it's not as strong a film, it's still well worth watching -- especially for those with an interest in American politics.
My friends and I had a good discussion about whether or not the dialogue was realistic, or completely overblown. As a satire, it's incredibly on the nose, but grapples with some big issues in a pretty fun way. Well worth a watch, and much better than other similar films like the Laundromat.

A grim story of Rome's underclass -- mobsters, prostitutes, and pimps. A solid entry in the neorealist canon, but with added dramatic flair.Movie comment on Jauja

Less over-the-top than many of De Palma's other films. It's a solid gangster film with a great sense of style.I have to say, it is bizarre seeing Sean Penn in a role like this -- nearly didn't recognise him!
