80% of the plot hinges on the main couple, who live in a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, to not pay attention to their daughter while exploring a hotel. They nearly lose track of her in the staircase, then catch up, then they argue about it, while looking away from their daughter. She, again, walks away. Then she vanishes. Who doesn't keep an eye on their child while in an unfamiliar, dark location? Twice?
The tone at the start was very good. It was super obvious that
the show was front to kill everyone
but at least they built the tension well about when and how it would happen.
But knowing what the big bad guy's plan is in the end, it seems really unnecessary to put on a show. Just offer the free meal and free night's stay at the hotel? It'll achieve the same goal, plus the guests will be asleep and vulnerable?
The masks are barely utilized. I think just once near the end they're used by Leo to cause confusion in a clever way, but I think that's really it. They want to distinguish guests from employees/actors, but we see many guests take them off very quickly.
Lots and lots of little holes like that makes me unable to recommend the movie, despite its strong start.
Not terrible, not particularly good. The main character is pretty annoying and will not. shut. up. He's always trying to shove as many little zingers (none good) as he can. I was interested enough during the first half where it's kind of typical but the main guy just gets more and more convinced his brother-in-law is a vampire. The second half was a slog where they try to fight against Dracula to cure everyone from their vampirism.
I thought it was a very good film, but also I wouldn't say I liked it, if that makes sense. It's a bit slow, depressing and a little gross here and there, but its premise is awesome and it left me deep in thought at the end. If you're in the mood for weird, absolutely recommend.
At first I thought it was an interesting premise, but about half the movie is just Anna flirting with John like some sort of trashy NTR romance. The surrogate thing does add a bit of uniqueness, but we really didn't need all the last-minute clichés. Main character has a cat? Oh jee I wonder
if Anna's gonna kill the cat for literally no reason!
! Plus, there's NO WAY Anna 40 weeks pregnant is doing any sneaking around unnoticed. Then like a day after giving birth she's ready to
Not scary at all save from a few short moments. More sad than scary tbh. Good performances and interesting idea, just a bit on the boring side for what I was looking for.
Seen this done better a dozen times. Unlikeable protagonist who's rude, needlessly edgy, and of course pervs on his new neighbor... at the midway point she confronts him about it and he describes how he saw her eating pizza-flavored chips and reading books. And she finds it endearing how he's noticed so much about her..? Girl, he's a stalker in the making, run.
It was pretty decent imo, nothing ground-breaking but competently-made and kept my interest. I thought the climax was sadly the most predictable and played out bit.
If I found a hidden room in my house and suspected my husband was involved in a crime, I wouldn't go down there by myself, i'd get police over to check it out.
Pretty solid, good tension, but I thought it could've used a bit more surprise or twists. Nothing really unexpected happens, so it's like I've seen that same movie before a few times.
It was more sad than scary, and it wasn't really scary. The creature looked spooky enough sometimes, but other times it's just obviously a CGI creature so it's not super impressive. I did think the autism angle with the kid added a lot of depth to an otherwise bland movie. It was ok.
Such a boring, boomer movie. A main character at one point says "We may not be the best generation(...)" like it's a given that millenials suck? At another point a children's basketball team is given a participation trophy and a main character teaches them they have to earn trophies, and they all revolt to the tournament organizers while shouting "no trophies!" The movie's understanding of the job market also seemed to be very outdated, to the point of being irritating and condescending ("just don't give up and you'll get your dream job!")
You get exactly what you expect. Very cliché, nothing new or particularly interesting, from beginning to end. At least it was competently made, the main character was alright, and they made good use of the premise.
I thought the movie juggled a few interesting ideas, but ultimately is only good for shock value. Predictably,
the cat is gratuitously killed early on
, and there's some torture and mild (?) mutilation as well throughout. It wasn't scary per se beyond maybe a couple scenes in the beginning and was just an unpleasant experience. Maybe if you're really into movies about cults you might enjoy it, otherwise hard pass.
Seeing as I love Korean horror films and am not very picky with them, I expected to enjoy this thoroughly but was very disappointed with this anthology. The main premise was a bit strange to start: a killer kidnaps a girl to tell him scary stories because otherwise he can't sleep... I mean, sure, I guess. As long as the stories are ok I don't mind a silly excuse.
All the stories over-relied on the annoying trope of "something scary happens, the main character wakes up and it was a dream... but then the scary thing happens anyway 5 mins later". The first story was the better of the bunch, with at least one or two creepy moments. Otherwise, the others were incredibly stupid with no suspense and a surprising amount of cheap gore.
I thought it was ok. In my opinion the least scary of the series, but still had some cool moments and a few creative scenes, too. I especially liked
when Frenchie enters the room where the gateway/portal is and there's a dozen people completely immobile with sacks on their heads. The imagery was interesting
. But one (small) thing bugged me throughout and that's how they make a point that Frenchie is French Canadian, they say it repeatedly like some sort of running gag - so far so good - but whenever he does speak French he doesn't have a French Canadian accent at all. Apparently the actor's Belgian, which sounds a lot closer to France French than Canadian French, and that kind of ruins the joke /: Oh well.
I'd recommend watching the movie if there's nothing else to watch. It wasn't particularly boring, just sadly much more uninspired than the previous entries of the Conjuring series and spin-offs.
I watched it without knowing what was awaiting me, assuming it to be a spin-off or remake of the old Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser and so I had pretty low expectations. It had some good parts and in my opinion never reached complete boredom levels, at least. I do have many complaints about the movie though. tl;dr version after long rant.
One big problem to me was that none of the characters were particularly developped. I didn't feel the main male character (Nick?)'s supposed development. It wouldn't be a huge deal if
the ending didn't heavily rely on him "realizing the good in him". No, he still felt like a selfish jerk to me at the end.
. He was also extremely annoying throughout. I thought the mummy herself was the most relatable character, and the best parts of the movie is when she beats the crap out of Nick.
Another major issue is that it felt like they threw way too many different elements in there. Hallucinations, possession, a magic dagger, zombie-esque hordes, ghost-like apparition, mind-controlling spiders, AND DR. JEKYLL as a monster-researcher. They're obviously trying to tie a bunch of monsters together but this was just too disconnected from the main plot.
Lastly, the mummy herself. Don't get me wrong, she looked cool, her design was creative and the actress was right for the part. But does she have to be an erotic mummy, seriously? Kissing people to death, constantly making sexy faces at Nick and sitting on people suggestively when about to sacrifice them to Seth. If they want to make a sexy-mummy movie, ok, whatever, indulge in your mummy-fetish. But this was intended as an action/horror movie so it was just really distracting and unnecessary.
tl;dr: main character annoying, too many elements thrown in & mummy was hard to take seriously because of emphasized sex appeal.
I also quite enjoyed the movie, but to balance out the positive reviews I'll note a few things I didn't like as much.
First off, nobody ever turns on a light. Actually they try turning on one light at one point (doesn't work for some reason that is not explained), and after that never touch a light switch again. I know they need the dark to add tension, but it got a bit annoying.
I think it might bug people who know some French that they keep saying the name Desjardins as "Dayhardeenz", and I'm wondering where that "h" sound came from. It really is a detail, though.
And lastly, while the climax was generally good, it got a little bit repetitive.
The main characters look for Deborah and the little girl for a few minutes, then find them standing together facing away. They slowly approach them and get attacked by Deborah. Rinse and repeat like 3 times.
.
Otherwise, pretty solid movie with some creative plot points and good tension.
....lol.
I suggest not having a young child watch it, since it's surprisingly eerie at times (like the first time we see the princess!). The story makes little sense beyond following the original (
this one has a robot witch who thinks she can become queen by having her giant son marry the princess. But the princess should be queen by now? Her parents are dead I don't get it lol
) and there are way too many songs, only a few of which are ok, others are just really annoying. It did have a few cool creepy bits and sometimes the background music was awesome. If you like weird movies that keep alternating between kids film and mild horror, you could be entertained.
Anyway, not a bad movie, though not very scary. Overall more thought-provoking than the average ghost film, but may or may not provide quite the level of scare you're looking for. (hint: butterflies aren't very scary by nature.) I also felt like there were a lot of plot holes, but not to the point of ruining the experience. The end "twist" was fairly clever.
Seems like a pretty disliked movie, though I enjoyed it. It is, however, very typical ghost story horror stuff, so you know exactly what you're getting into even before starting it. It's got the cheap jumpscares (
SUDDENLY A CROW GOES CAW IN YOUR FACE
) but also a few more clever elements. It's unoriginal, but it's at least competent.
It did have quite a few really good jokes, and it started very strong. However, I feel like the last third of the film just dragged, partly from having too many predictable elements and fewer jokes.
When characters such as
Sauron and Voldemort
first popped up, I had a chuckle, it was cool to see them so unexpectedly. On the other hand, they weren't very funny or cleverly used, so they felt more like a cheap cameo instead of a parody. With the rich villains commonly seen in Batman movies, it was a weird choice to use villains from other blockbusters instead of fan-favorites like Scarecrow, Penguin, Catwoman, etc. This being a Batman movie, I would have loved to see more of those guys but they barely had a line.
On the plus side, I never really cared for Robin or Alfred, but they were surprisingly funny in this.
Pretty solid zombie movie. Not sure why it got quite this much hype since it is overall fairly standard stuff, but I guess it did manage to make its characters likeable despite their limited development and it used its train setting to the maximum. A few bits left me scratching my head
like when the older lady opens the door for the zombies to eat most of the survivors, or when the main character almost literally sticks his hand in a zombie's mouth
. It did have a touching ending, and a few great moments of tension.
One of the most typical horror movies ever. Cliché after cliché, every now and then I even wondered if I'd seen the movie before (but no, I hadn't). If you love crow jump-scares, you're in for a treat. On the plus side, the ghosts were occasionally creepy.
