A chessy but vivid fusion of Soviet and Indian cinematic sensibilities. I loved the dacoit's hide-out with its partitioning entrance and tumbling waterfall, concealing the cavernous, magical area behind. The detail and colour of this hide-out is one of the real strongpoints of this film, I think. It's not as elegant or refined but in some ways the magicality of these scenes reminded me of Ptushko's entrancing 'The Stone Flower' (1946). The songs are blended pretty well into the story and carry it along. Interesting too to see the iconic Sofiko Chiaureli in a motherly role. She adds a touch of class to a lurid but very entertaining ride!
Beautiful, observational, touching, and with local flavour of Uruguay. There aren't any bad people present in this difficult story. A film with a glow of humanity and hope that involves and ends up warming the heart.

Robert Hartford-Davis' 'Crosstrap' isn't lost any longer. I watched it a couple of years ago on the UK retro channel Talking Pictures TV.Interesting list!
