I think it's fascinating that everybody basically agrees about what this movie is - it's insane, and ridiculous and makes no sense, but Tom Hardy and the Venom/Eddie relationship is great.
But apparently it just depends on how much you are game for the insanity and don't mind all of the many many things that don't work in favour of the one thing that does, or do you focus on the many many things.
I thought it was a glorious fucking insanity and I had a lot of fun with it, after Venom shows up. Before that, it's really boring and that's the worst thing about it. After Venom shows up, yes, it's not great as a quality movie, but it is never ever boring.
not scary? this movie is fucking horrifying. THIS is what horror should be like, not dumb mosters and jump scares. it is excellently acted, excellently paced and just keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole time.
it reminds me of Joel Edgerton's The Gift, in that it's not a "supernatural" horror but it is incredibly, truly scary the whole time.
Annoyingly and unnecessarily convoluted. DeNiro and Reno especially are great, that's about the only positive.
And some people calling it a thriller? There wasn't a single tense or surprising moment in this movie.
This was such a weird, unexpectedly dark movie. I did not see that change in tone coming at all, not from trailers, not from how the movie was progressing. It has scenes that are emotionally uncomfortable to watch which makes them really great, because a movie that can make me have this type of a visceral emotional reaction to a scene is doing its job correctly.
I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to watch something off the beaten path.
Really solid movie, interesting characters, great performances, engaging storyline and beautiful cinematography. But ultimately, it didn't make me feel all that much, unlike other award-season movies of this year.
This movie is like “Best comedy of the year“ and it is 90% certified fresh on RT and whatnot and it’s just…. not only is it not funny, it is downright depressing.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t do well with comedies in general, but come on, I laughed more at the moronic Mila Kunis/Justin Timberlake movie….
Melissa McCarthy is a genius though, that cannot ever be denied.
there was one good scene in the whole horror show and that was towards the beginning, where Bella dreams of the wedding and the Volturi show up and then Bella and Edward are standing over a pile of bodies. that was fun.
otherwise the whole thing was astoundingly bad.
and can anyone explain to me why Robert Pattinson feels the need to scrunch up his eyebrows everytime words come out of his mouth? seriously! it's ridiculous!

McAvoy is at his most brilliant, ranging from emotionally vulnerable to bad boy to certifiably insane. The soundtrack is also a delight.
Another great, unsettling story brought to you by the unhinged imagination of Irvine Welsh.
