A movie about children and their everyday life including their fantasies, happiness and sorrows. It has that very familiar Ghibli pacing about it, making for a very relaxing and enjoyable experience.
My friend lent this to me, saying "it's really good!", later to reveal to me that it was a joke. So I expected big things from this movie, and the movie showed promise of something bigger coming, only to shower me in disappointment.
The movie's biggest flaw, for me, is that it doesn't let you in on the "secret", serving the ultimate anti-climax at the end.
There are very few racing movies, and this one shows why.
It falls in the same trap like all the others. The first one being there always seems to be another gear in the transmission.
The hero is always able to catch up, no matter how far behind. It goes on, and each of these makes the typical racing movie very difficult to immerse the viewer.
Still, it's an OK movie. The untz untz at the start of the movie, when the racers show up, is part of the reason I enjoyed it. It has got a good vibe to it.
Beautiful CG, although it crashes a bit with the drawn characters.
The screenplay must have been written by someone in the porn industry, because it feels awkward and seldom comes across as believable.
This film, as all Ghibli productions, has a wonderful atmosphere. It's a joy to experience it. I liked that the ending was unpredictable, because if it wasn't, it would be your usual Disney fare. I don't watch Ghibli films to scratch my guy gets the girl itch, there's a dime a dozen for that category. No, I watch them because the world's are so wonderfully immersing.
Not that I dislike Disney movies.
It's fascinating how Miyazaki manages to turn a story about mundane, everyday life stuff, into a full movie. I asked myself several times "why do I enjoy this so much?", but I don't know, I just do.
No matter how cliche it may sound, the movie makes me want to enjoy everyday life, warts and all.
Non-existent character development. I didn't care, at all, when the director wanted me to. The neighbors could have been cut from the movie, and you wouldn't even notice something was missing.
If a heavily stereotyped version of evil white man doesn't scare you off, then by all means, enjoy the fights. If you want something more out of it, stay well clear!
