Interesting angle on the heist movie with an emotional dramatic core. The figuring out how to deal with the situation part was a great payoff that reminded more of Home Alone than Memento. In fact I think this movie is far better than Memento. I think Memento is overrated and superficial.
Great fucking spy movie. One of the best I've seen. Tension and pacing are perfect, plot isn't too convoluted but has enough turns to be interesting. A++
A real hidden gem. Great dialogue and atmosphere. Some pretty interesting shoot out scenes that did inventive things like diving through a supermarket shelf--haven't even seen that in a Woo movie.
The protag has a decent arc.
Excellent movie with a lot of unpredictable moments. Dialogue is fantastic, although goes a little too over the top with Vaughn's character. You can appreciate it in a Guy Ritchie sort of way. In fact the whole movie out Ritchies Ritchie.
Pretty good, but not excellent. First 1/3rd is perfect and really built up the tension well. Unfortunately, from around 1/3 in to the midpoint it really gets muddy and totally loses the pacing. I think it was a mistake to do 2 backstories in a row. I realize that's how he did Lock Stock but it just didn't work here. By the time you get out of flashback hell you don't really care anymore. Ending was lackluster anticlimax. They build up the face-off the whole movie then it's just nothing.
Impossible to watch if you have even rudimentary knowledge of the subject matter. The horrible attempts at Japanese by the mystery meat cast kill your disbelief instantly.
The movie is full of shit like this. For some reason the FBI office is dressed up as an LAPD bureau and all the feds act like beat cops. The yakuza comically allow themselves to be killed by a dog-bomb and are cowards, etc.
Some cool guns in it but has at least one huge oversight where Li's Walther 9mm takes huge bullets that would never fit. They were as ignorant on the weaponry as they were every other aspect.
Whoever put together this movie has zero real world knowledge. Probably grew up in Burbank sitting in his bedroom watching cable all day.
Felt like a kind of shittier version of Lock Stock/Snatch. At least with Revolver he was trying something new. Boggles the mind why he thought this could make a trilogy. Johnny Quid had some great lines though.
By the end I figured out what they were going for and it was an interesting experiment all throughout. Editing kinda ruined it. Like you have that super intense moment at the end and it gets hard cut to an intertext. Plus that godawful spelling out of the theme in PhD soundbites in the end credits. Don't do that.
It would have been possible to make the same movie with the same themes and still have it feel like it wasn't turning in circles the whole time. Basically this was Ritchie trying to do Lynch. Admirable, but a little unpolished.
Started off promising but turned out to be a real stinker. Once you learn the 'twist' you realize how pointless it all was. Statham is wasted on such a static, slow burn movie. They give up trying to be cerebral by the third act and go for a dynamic cat and mouse approach but by then you don't give a shit.
Expect all the usual tropes like 'my dad died in a liquor store robbery' 'detective on suspension is brought back by request of the bad guy' and 'elaborate bait and switch by the heist puller'.
Also every attempt at linking this to chaos theory is a complete asspull and doesn't even demonstrate wikipedia level knowledge of the subject.
Completely failed at the box office and banged another nail into the coffin of Phillipe's career
Given the title it's easy to overlook this as a generic movie but it's actually quite spectacular. Immaculate execution and pacing and great interactions between military, FBI, and political characters. Exemplary and underrated. Far, far better than Jack Reacharound.
This movie has exactly the amount of character development it needed--more would have bogged it down. It's not a character study. It's a military-political action thriller. Other user below compares this to a Michael Bay movie. No, this would have been terrible as a Bay movie--all explosions and no story.
Pretty low-tier thriller. Instead of focusing on the psychological aspects you have two scenes of Douglas trying to interrogate Brittany Murphy and the rest is yawnable chase scenes and home invasion shtick. Kinda dogshit.
Pretty good actually. Generally not into women protags but they did it right here. If they made this today it would be pretentious dogshit with mary sue plot armor, but back then they still knew how to write women characters properly.
Also the movie is full of gun porn if you're into that. Sig Sauers, Berettas, Colt Commanders, the LT even uses a Colt MK IV.
The plot was a little convoluted especially given that the plot doesnt hold center focus in this, rather the relationship does. The dialogue was witty though.
Muddied clusterfuck of a plot. Too much crap going on and yet nothing really happens in the movie besides the protagonist looking moody. Unbelievably, there was originally even more useless plot in there that they cut out. This isn't how you write a movie.
Enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. Much better put together than the clusterfuck that was The Deer Hunter.
"I'm gonna go kill a bunch of people."
Very solid. No Country clearly took a lot of inspiration from this one. Only part that felt kind of out of place was Charley's would-be misstep in trying to get a fence for the money, however as the movie goes on it seems that this was a ploy to draw the mafia out. I guess Varrick is the protagonist but not actually the mc as he hides things from the audience.
