Absolutely wonderful. The animation made my jaw drop at times. Excellent Polynesian-inspired music, memorable characters, deeply meaningful story.
My only "but" might be that Disney heroines are starting to blend into each other in terms of personality (not unlike the classic ones did), but it took such enormous steps on creating a story about human relationships that the experience is ultimately refreshing nonetheless. For my money's worth, better than Zootopia, and that movie was already incredible.
The animation is gorgeous and I wish New York was as clean and colorful as in this movie. Unfortunately, a weak plot and a cast of characters so big it puts Atlantis to shame really gets in the way of what had a lot of potential to be great.
This is a film that puts all of its emphasis on art direction. It's gorgeous. The intercourse scene up the mountain as the bodies become blurred while juxtaposed with shots of insects on flowers was deeply moving. I felt like I was watching something truly meaningful. And of course, everything about the ending was perfect.
Don't be afraid, Célestine... I'm not your nightmare.
Beautiful animation with an impressive art style that mimics watercolor picture books, complemented by an outstanding soundtrack. The story and message are nothing new or terribly exciting, yet it's precisely this simplicity that allows us to keep focus on what is truly important.
There are many positive things I could say about this movie, including the incredible use of colors to express emotions and set different moods, or the noticeable attention to every single detail throughout the entire film. However, my favorite thing has to be the soundtrack... simply stunning.
Feels like a cutout from real life put on the big screen. I can see it being called pointless, but definitely not meaningless. Every conversation and piece of small talk brings further light to the characters. There are no plot twists, yet the storytelling runs at the precise pace. Simply beautiful. The final scene, as the talking fades out and we remain in silence, was perfect.
I'd also like to mention Manville's incredible acting and very, very interesting character. At the start it feels like she'll be much like Poppy from Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky", but she takes a completely different, much more satisfying direction. Cheers.
It's not bad for a B-movie, but the tension is mostly built on the characters' collective stupidity. Pretty much the only competent character was the old lady, and this should be pretty worrying considering she's senile.
