Just to be clear, Elisabeth Moss’’ performance is so much more than just dirty hair. Watching her is, as always, a thrilling and ever astonishing experience.
Akerman - a genius since the very first film. Amazing how so many themes from her later work are already in this first short. I would love to have an isolated audio track of this!
I'm surprised at how many negative comments this film has. I found it to be entrancing from the very first beautiful extreme close-ups of Faye Dunaway. With its morally ambiguous story and protagonists and unconventional romance, it is to me one of the most interesting Hollywood films of the 60s. A definite courageous and much needed shift in Hollywood storytelling that deserves its iconic legacy.
PS. But yes, Blanche Barrow has got to be one of the most annoying characters of all time.
I am completely overwhelmed by this. I have no words. It has touched me in a way that no other film ever has. A beautiful, mind-blowing, heart-shattering and heart-filling. masterpiece.
So, this film simply would not exist without Polly Platt, Peter's then wife, who is credited for "Design" when she really co-directed and co-wrote the film. It's just frustrating to see she got so much less credit than she deserved. She had the idea to adapt the novel to film, convinced Peter Bogdanovich to do it, she did all the design, she found Cybill Sheperd, found the location, and so much more.
First fictional film ever made. And by a woman. This is 6 years before Le Voyage Sur La Lune and doesn’t get nearly as much credit for it as it should.
One of the greatest experimental and surreal films of all time, directed by a woman, in 1943 (!!!!), and all that people can come up to talk about is David Lynch. Please, let’s talk about the extraordinary Maya Deren! She was a groundbreaking artist and David Lynch had nothing to do with it.
When Laura bursts out laughing, at home, in front of the fireplace - I think that's one of the best performances in cinema. I could watch it over and over.
