The kind of movie I probably would've loved when I was like-- I don't know-- ten or eleven... then would've loathed and ridiculed at eighteen through half my twenties... and now sorta can't help but admire in a they-don't-make-them-like-this-anymore kind of way. Cheesy in a fun way, looking like a million bucks, hilariously nineties. It's good! Also I thought the make-up came with his resurrection. It caught me off guard that this ghost is painting his face and doing guitar solos in the rooftop. Lol.

Great film about how our environment will crush our potential and our dreams if we let it-- but one that also shows the dangers of rejecting your roots and losing yourself (or your literal "self") in fantasy. It is sordid, ugly, disgusting at times, funny and sad. Frank about childhood and child sexuality too, which will probably turn off a bunch of modern day viewers who have Eternal Sunshine'd any hint of sex from their formative years and balk at any film that dares show how heavily it looms over the thoughts of even the youngest kids.

It loses its thread when it falls into a pretty ludicrous airport novel plot, but for about an hour it is cooking with gas. The way Polanski shows the couple's relationship and the absolute horror of those first few hours when he realizes something is terribly wrong-- and that no one will help him-- is just masterful. Furthermore, the film is rich with subtext and meaning, the same way a Hitchcock thriller is. The only problem is that Hitch could get away with nonsense plotting because he was working in a heightened sort of tone whereas Polanski goes for cold realism, which makes its clumsy second half just feel dumb. It's also a bit too long-- too much comings and goings-- Seigner's character flip-flops over and over and it gets tedious. This could've been a great film, but c'est la vie. What we got is pretty damn good.

like a funnier, nastier, weirder and bisexier Easy Rider. the dream of the 90s is alive in that dog we ran over. extremely recommended.

You know, a lot of great period pieces present us with people who can't articulate why exactly they conform to an existence that clearly makes them unhappy. Naive viewers can watch them and think thank god things aren't like that anymore, thank god we have the tools to understand, thank god we're ready to look inside ourselves. But what about this film? What about the news? How many people out there are ready to do awful things and double down only to say "I don't know" when questioned about the extent of their inhumanity? When's the last time you've thought about why you did the worst thing you've ever done? This film is hilarious btw.

when your kids hate you so much but don’t have the emotional skills to cope with that so they end up hating themselves and destroying the future you planned for them because it’s not the one they want. yeah. i'm thinking toxic parenting really is a curse.

Living is easy with eyes closed, said John Lennon. Only we can’t close our eyes anymore. The light is too bright. Scoffing at the world we have made for ourselves is all that we have left.

Charming, consistently funny and heart-warming. The touch was strong in this one.

asks a lot of you since it's tough to know why anything's happening for about 3/4 of the movie. but it wraps up nicely and the opening sequence is outstanding.
