This movie is highly overrated in my opinion, yes the first few minutes were funny with a great performance by Johnny Depp. But the rest of the movie is just aimless, it goes nowhere and it doesn't have much story to tell.
Maybe you'd have to do drugs yourself to relate to. I don't know. If I where you, I wouldn't watch it in a cinema, watch it somewhere where you can fast forward and/or skip the movie entirely.
First of it's an anime and with that comes a few typical japanese things, like JPop and some (not all) grotesque faces (the first one I like, the second one I don't) that might or might not influence your viewing experience.
If you're okay with that you'll have an interesting and thrilling movie experience, with quite a few twist that'll keep it interesting until the end.
Not a masterpiece, but not as bad as people say it is. It's rather shallow (but hey, most action movies are ...). If you like the artistic style of Sin City you should look into this one too.

If you like Star Wars parodies you might want to take a look into Fanboys, not for everyone, but people who enjoy roadtrip movies (not suitable for Star Trek fans ;D).
I haven't done any reasearch on the movie but it's clearly french (ignore the american environment), one can tell :-)
For some people that might be a little bit uncomfortable with the sexual subtone, but if you've viewed other french movies before and you enjoyed them you'll enjoy this movie as well.

Unfortunately this movie is not that exciting, but its visuals are pretty nice and inteeesting (mixed real and animated actors/scenes)If you liked the comic or the franco-belge comic gerne in general you should give this a try. Also do so if you liked Blade Runner.
