I appreciate how this movie is constructed around the perspective of the family of an addict, but the film also feels lacking in urgency and impact because there isn’t enough of the son's perspective to ground the story properly. It doesn’t have to be much more, but a little more time spent with the son would help shore up many of this movie’s problems.

The pacing issues reappear in this one because there is just too much they have to wrap up efficiently. But this does have the best Sam-Frodo content, though, so there is that.

I understand and can appreciate what this movie is trying to do with the romanatic comedy trappings used to explore the lived experience of a black mother but the styles don't mesh as well as the filmmakers probably hoped they would. Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones hold this movie together to prevent it from falling apart, but, because the central concept of the movie doesn't fully work, the film is never quite compelling or funny enough to be a smashing success.
