A personal top-list of movies rated 9/10 or better. * Score is based upon following criterias: - Story - Acting - Score & Soundtrack - Cinematography/Picture - Special effects (only for the movies where this plays a significant role) - Entertainment value Ranked alphabetically, not after rating. * This is not a pure favorite-list. Many personal favorites will never reach this list, and movies on this list does not necessary make them favorites. (Disclaimer: This is a constant work in progress. 14. A Cuban Cinema Companion's icon

A Cuban Cinema Companion

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. With the recent shift in Cuba-US relations stemming from the relaxing of travel restrictions and an influx of American visitors, interest in Cuba and its culture has increased substantially. A new emphasis has been placed on the island country’s many cultural and artistic achievements, specifically in film. Cuban cinema is recognized around the world as having produced some of the most celebrated works originating from Latin America—such as Fresa y Chocolate and La Muerte de un Burócrata—as well as many prominent artists—including directors Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Humberto Solás. In A Cuban Cinema Companion, editors Salvador Jimenez Murguía, Sean O’Reilly, and Amanda McMenamin have assembled a collection of essays about more than 100 films across six decades, including feature films, documentaries, and animation. These entries also provide information on directors, actresses, and actors of Cuban cinema. Entries range from films like Retrato de Teresa to Buena Vista Social Club and include descriptions of each film’s plot, themes, and critical commentary, as well as comprehensive production details and brief suggestions for further reading. Beginning with the victory of the Cuban revolution—from the first ten years of what is often referred to as Cuba’s “Golden Age” of film to the present—this volume offers readers valuable insights into Cuban history, politics, and culture. An indispensable guide to one of the great world cinemas, A Cuban Cinema Companion will be of interest to students, academics, and the general public alike. Missing from IMDB: El maná / Manna (1960) 1912: Voces para un silencio / 1912: Breaking the Silence / (Chapters 1, 2, and 3) (2010, 2011, 2012) Severo secreto / Secret Severo (2016) El Siglo de las Luces / Explosion in a Cathedral (1992)
15. A Decade Under the Influence (2003) - titles mentioned's icon

A Decade Under the Influence (2003) - titles mentioned

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. A Decade Under the Influence (2003) IMDb page for documentary I've included films mentioned by speakers, shown in clips or named stills, in headlines, or on posters. Haven't included films not specifically identified in photo montages such as during the opening credits or the review of Post War European cinema nor films mentioned in newspaper clipping text shown. Titles are not ranked nor have I tried to organize the list to match the documentary: instead the films are sorted first by year, then listed in alphabetical order (ignoring articles).
16. A Documentary Feel's icon

A Documentary Feel

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Movies that feature acting and direction that evoke an organic, documentary-like realism. Some of the elements that characterize this style include: Handheld cameras Visual drabness (muted colors, grainy film-stock, etc) Lack of flashy techniques (visual effects, narration, pop soundtrack, etc) Nonprofessional actors in key or tertiary roles. Related: actors with looks or speech atypical in films (obesity, "low class" accents, etc) Improvised or prosaic dialogue and natural conversation rhythms (interruptions, stammering, "ums," etc) Silence: scenes with little or no dialogue Ambient noises in place of musical score (traffic, fluorescent lights, birds, etc) Stillness: scenes with little or no action A realistic plot; often with difficult ("gritty") subject matter and a lower socio-economic setting. This mostly unclassified documentary-like style (Sometimes ridiculously labeled "Neo-neorealism") has antecedents in Italian Neorealism, French New Wave, and New Hollywood. It shares elements with (but is not equivalent to) Dogme 95 and Mumblecore, and is mostly a post-2000 phenomenon (kickstarted and most heavily influenced by the 90s films of the Dardenne brothers). International hotspots include France, America, Romania, and Iran. Please leave suggestions! I will add more. Keep in mind that "Mockumentary" films like Borat, Man Bites Dog, Blair Witch, Spinal Tap, etc, are a different animal and do not qualify.
