Favs/dislikes: 12:0. This is the 250 Quintessential Noirs list from TSPDT just before it got its large update on 15th January 2018 and got reduced to 100 films. -
AFI’s 100 Years of Film Scores: The Nominations
Favs/dislikes: 17:0. The American Film Institute’s original 2005 list of the 250 Film Scores nominated for AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores. Films released in 2002 and prior were eligible. -
AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars
Favs/dislikes: 12:0. In 1999 AFI continued their "100 Years" series with "100 Years...100 Stars." This list sought to identify the top 25 greatest American actors and the 25 greatest American actresses of all time. The criteria was that the performer (or team of performers) must have made their screen debut prior to 1950 or whose death made a complete body of work. This list was designed for those who wish to familiarize themselves with the best films of those 50 stars. Using imdb rankings, I have identified the five most highly regarded films for each performer (excluding TV as well as cameos or other very small parts). I have also excluded duplicates, so for example the five films for Fred Astaire include collaborations with Ginger Rogers that do not appear in her five films. Enjoy! -
An alternative IMDb Top 250: the "favoritest" movies relative to era
Favs/dislikes: 4:0. Number of high IMDb votes (8–10) multiplied by a factor based on the half-decade of the film's release. This weights older films more based on the fewer votes being cast for their movie peers, but serves to highlight movies that are disproportionately watched based on their era. These are the populist greats that stand out among titles from the same time. -

Discussable Movies
Favs/dislikes: 2:0. If you want to have something to talk about with a friend, watch one of these movies together and you should be set for conversation for a while. I didn't select each of these movies individually; rather, I used a stupidly complicated "discussability" formula that I devised to generate this list. The formula is surely imperfect, but I'm happy with it at the present time.
