European Nightmares - Horror Cinema in Europe since 1945 - Filmography (2012)

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. Edited by Patricia Allmer, David Huxley and Emily Brick. This volume is the first edited collection of essays focusing on European horror cinema from 1945 to the present. It features new contributions by distinguished international scholars exploring British, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Northern European and Eastern European horror cinema. The essays employ a variety of current critical methods of analysis, ranging from psychoanalysis and Deleuzean film theory to reception theory and historical analysis. The complete volume offers a major resource on post-war European horror cinema, with in-depth studies of such classic films as Seytan (Turkey, 1974), Suspiria (Italy, 1977), Switchblade Romance (France, 2003), and Taxidermia (Hungary, 2006).

Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Experimental/Avant-garde/Underground Films (2012)

Favs/dislikes: 105:3. This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria. The list is divided into 5 sections: I. 7. New Hollywood - The American New Wave's icon

New Hollywood - The American New Wave

Favs/dislikes: 110:0. The most notable films from an exceptional era -- from Bonnie and Clyde (1967) to Heaven's Gate (1980). I've decided to tighten up my criteria for this list. In order to qualify: 1. The movie must have been made via a major American studio (or at least financed by); 2. and yet without studio interference; 3. between the years 1967 and 1980; 4. capture a certain grittiness, authenticity, and spirit of the times. You'll notice that certain directors (Woody Allen, John Cassavetes, Stanley Kubrick, etc.) do not appear on this list, since they worked outside of the studio system.
  8. The 51 All-Time Greatest Acting Performances....That Oscar Ignored's icon

The 51 All-Time Greatest Acting Performances....That Oscar Ignored

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Entertainment Weekly dug into the scores of great performances that have been overlooked by Oscar over the past 87 years. Some are so iconic that they had to triple-check the history books to make sure that Oscar had been so blind. (Really? Ingrid Bergman wasn’t nominated for Casablanca?) They could’ve made a list of 250—but from that list, they culled it down to 51 and ranked them, counting down to the single greatest acting performance that failed to grab Oscar’s attention. Note: The list makers place Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke together in Before Midnight as the 51/50 greatest performances. Additionally, they place John Cazale at 14 and Diane Keaton at 41, both for their work in The Godfather: Part II. The list, therefore, comprises 49 different films.
  9. The Pendragon Society's 100 Greatest Film Acting Performances of All-Time's icon

The Pendragon Society's 100 Greatest Film Acting Performances of All-Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. So what are the greatest acting performances of all time? Throughout August 2019 we polled members and contributors to find out what they considered to be the greatest performances in film ever. As with all these types of polls the final list is not going to please everyone. Perhaps unsurprisingly (and a little disappointingly) the best of the American mainstream dominates here, with a high placing for Heath Ledger’s turn in The Dark Knight and a large representation from the New Hollywood era (with 5 entries for the first 2 Godfather films!). What stands out more than anything is the lack of female performances that make the top 100 (only 12!). Is Casablanca really Bogart’s best performance? Wasn’t Brando better in On the Waterfront than anything he did in the 70s? Let us know what you think. ---Pendragon Society The following films appear more than once: The Godfather (#1, #16, #100) Schindler's List (#4, #60) The Godfather Part II (#13, #24) Apocalypse Now (#28, #58) The Deer Hunter (#30, #65) The Shawshank Redemption (#32, #73) Persona (#35, #54) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (#45, #68) Goodfellas (#49, #51) Gone with the Wind (#62, #78)
  10. Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Movie Performances of All Time's icon

Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Movie Performances of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 7:0. Premiere Magazine (in its April 2006 issue), in an article written by numerous authors, published a list of the 100 Greatest (Movie) Performances of All-Time, to celebrate the best movie performances in film history. The defining performances were excerpted and abbreviated from the article. Facts and Commentary About the List: The authors described the movie performances: "They made us laugh, they made us cry....We love great movies the most - we feel the most electric connection to them - when the actors look out from that big screen, and hook into us. They make us believe that they're the people they're playing and that we, as viewers, have a genuine stake in what's coming next."

  23. Paste's 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time's icon

Paste's 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 11:0. This list has been a long time coming for Paste. We are fortunate—some would say “cool enough”—to have quite a lot of genre expertise to call upon when it comes to horror in particular. Several Paste staff writers and editors are lifelong horror geeks, and there’s also a strong sentiment toward the macabre among several of our more prolific contributing writers. Case in point: We have so many writers focused on horror that we’ve produced huge lists of the 70 best horror films on Netflix, or the 100 best horror films on Shudder, both within the last year. We’ve kept you up to date with the 10 best horror movies of 2017 so far. We’ve even given you the likes of the 50 best zombie movies of all time, and the 100 best vampire movies of all time, if you can believe that. And yet, somehow, despite all that expertise, we’ve never put together a definitive ranking of the best horror films of all time. That ends now, with the list below: a practical, must-see guide through the history of the horror genre. There are classic films on this list, of course. There are also likely a handful of independent features that will be unknown to all but the most dedicated horror hounds. There are foreign films from around the globe, entries that range from 1922 to 2017. In some cases, you will likely be shocked by films that are missing. In others, you’ll find yourself surprised to see us going to bat for films that don’t deserve the derision they’ve received. One thing is for certain: With all the films that were nominated, we could easily have made this list 200 entries long. Horror cinema speaks toward the dark side in all of us, allowing us to confront the most frightening, primal forces we struggle with every day—death, and human malevolence—in a way that is actually constructive in strengthening the psyche. In the oddest of ways, horror movies help us overcome our own fears. Last updated October 2022
