The Automobile in Cinema
Favs/dislikes: 13:0. An ode to the automobile (and its 2-wheeled brethren) in cinema. Speeding car chases through city traffic, engines revving aggressively, the squeal of whitewalls on the streets of 1940s Southern California. Cars give us cinematic insight into the human spirit. They can be a humble daily driver, a means of getting from point A to B. They can be an angry pulsing machine, barely gripping the road and containing the overwhelming mechanical forces asked of them. They be perpetually on the verge of breakdown, relying on careful cajoling to continue their labors. They are an extension of their driver and an entity unto themselves. -
The Dissolve 4 Stars and Up

There is a award called "Essential" marking those films, that are the most important at the time. In addition the ranking system goes from zero to five stars. This list contains all movies reviewed for their theatre release getting four or more stars. -

It is more a popularity list than a "highest rating" list. This far back one would expect that rating and votes should follow each other closely but it is not always the case. The list contains quite a number of short movies as it was the golden age of Chaplin and Keaton. -

Time Magazine's All-TIME 100 Movies (Nominees)
Favs/dislikes: 13:0. On May 23, 2004, TIME Magazine published online their list of "100 estimable films since TIME began, with the March 3, 1923 issue." Critics Richard Corliss and Richard Schickel collaborated on the list, and their original 100 films comprise selections 1-106 below. TIME subsequently added 20 more titles in February of 2005, and they are included in titles 107-134. In the process of making the original list, Corliss and Schickel had each started with a list of over 100 nominees. Of the 36 films on both lists, 31 made the original cut. Of the remaining five, one (All About My Mother) was included in the '05 addendum while the other four are items 135-138 below. Entries 139-234 represent the remaining nominees. -

Top 150 LGBT Films

This is an updated list of my [url=http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/top+100+homosexual+themed+movies/chantana/]previous version.[/url] I no longer separate between "serious" movies and movies with explicit sexual content as this distinction is idiosyncratic altogether. Many lists were updated or became longer. There will be no more ranking and calculating. The new system works much easier. Movies are sorted by the amount of times they were mentioned in the lists. New lists can be suggested and I am more than happy to find more interesting lists on the broad genre. There are essential gaps in the spheres of New Queer Cinema and LBGT porn. Both should find their way into a list like this and I am looking for good resources. One of which is Rich's brilliant book on the NQC.
