Black Sea plays like a decent, albeit unremarkable, mashup of Das Boot, The Abyss, and The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. Its biggest strengths lie in its performances, which are better than the script probably deserved, and the excellent fluid camerawork in the underwater sequences. Sadly however the film is severely let down by the human conflict element, which feels unconvincing and contrived, mostly because none of the characters (with the possible exception of Law's) are properly defined or differentiated. The result is that things are never quite as tense as the director clearly intended, however a great conclusion and minimal wasted screen time ensure that you won't be left overly disappointed. 9 years 2 months ago -
