On my way home I was giving a synopsis of the plot to my friend and she cut me off halfway saying "okay, that's enough. I don't want to hear more." It's a pretty intense and violent film. It's a non-chronological story where you follow Liz (played by Dakota Fanning), a mute woman who has an intense fear of the new reverend in town (brilliantly played by Guy Pearce). As the movie unravels things that happened before that moment and after you are holding your breath in your chair. I felt very uncomfortable with how life for women in 19th century America seemed to go. Death, torture and fear are a recurring theme and the movie haunted me home.

Guy Pearce plays his role amazingly well. A kind of calculated evil that reminded me of Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men, but with more Bible and more wrath. Emilia Jones plays a younger Liz and she truly wowed me with her acting skills, and that for a girl of fourteen! Kit Harington also pops in for some of it and puts on this hilarious American accent that felt a bit too heavy but you'll love him all the same. It was weird for me to see Dakota Fanning be a mom when I remember her 6 year old face from I Am Sam so well. She did a great job making us fear for her and root for her, though her blank face did feel frustrating, considering what was happening. I wish she'd screamed more or showed more emotion, but eh. Worth a watch!

(Also, random thought: the girl who plays Dakota's daughter was nine at the moment of recording and there's some pretty violent stuff going on. I wonder if they just recorded it or if they obfuscated some of what was happening.)

A brutal western/thriller movie starring Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce. Honestly one of the most violent movies I have seen, not by the amounts of blood spilled, but by the loadedness of the acts of violence. Not for the faint hearted.

Guy Pearce steals the show as The Reverend, a twisted man of faith who uses religion to satisfy his perverted hunger. Opposite to this we have Dakota Fanning and Emilia Jones who portray Liz in different stages of life trying to survive the Rev. Both actresses give life to Liz in such a way that I was cheering her on while holding my breath for what was to come. Unfortunately Kit Harrington was a bit of a dissapointment character wise. His character doesnt add that much to the story.

A powerful, but pretty nasty movie that had me gasping for air a few times. If I can take one thing from this movie it's that strong female characters in westerns do exist and that 19th Dutch religious zealots are absolutely crazy.
