Cloverfield... Blair Witch does Godzilla... I'd bought it as a Godzilla fan, and find it to be a Gojira for the post-9/11 age. After all, both films exist in the long shadow of a man-made disaster, and relevant disturbing images are found in each. I might be of another opinion had I nauseously seen it in theaters, but on a television, the handheld style didn't cause any queasies. On the contrary, I thought it was a very effective way to make the event seem real, to the point where I didn't know how some of the effects were achieved. The naturalistic acting also helped in this respect, and Hud was a pretty funny character.
I kind of enjoy the fact that it's like one of those major monster pics but brought down to the street level with a bunch of ordinary people. Godzilla movies have had the same kind of formula but never with a normal "that could be you and me" kind of cast. I think it also works well that we don't really know what is going on but can guess if we've seen other monster movies. Where did it come from? Will the military be able to stop it? How do we escape New York? Just like the characters we are left with the exact same questions which puts us in their shoes. This is probably my favorite found footage film.
I thought this was a really unique way of telling a story, especially one like this. It really gave it a 'real' feeling to it.
I really liked the bit at the end of the credits where there's audio of someone saying 'it's alive' or something, but reversed. It sounds so ominous played the right way around that I'm a little annoyed they reversed it.. Maybe just me.
the effects were better than i was expecting, but i hate the gimmicky camera work, i didn't like any of the characters, and i'm sick of films saying 'based on a true story' or 'the following footage was found' ect when it's clearly not true, its becoming a joke now.
As always with the shaky camera style I felt sick and had to pause in the middle. But it was a really good movie. Loved especially the end. (I got a bit pissed when Lily permanently put her high heels back on)

"Person-eye-view of a giant monster attack" turns out to be an excellent route to take with the kaiju genre. For movies whose stars are massive creatures, we get an oddly limited amount of chances to look at them from street level.
The movie itself is interesting and a testament to the fact that it's a good idea not to explain everything to the audience.
