I suggest reading Roger Ebert's review to get the real story , on the disease, and on the Crowley's. I love Harrison Ford, but I think he changed the real story to make a good role for himself. The real doctor is Asian and was at Duke, nowhere near Nebraska. The untreated children were much, much younger, which would have made the story less dramatic.

No fan of Brendan Fraser, most of the acting was quite dull. Harrison Ford as mediocre as usual, not bad in anyway though.
The story was perhaps the movies strongest point.
