I'm surprised this film got the critical drubbing that it did when it was released - it's a well written, well acted drama that achieves what it sets out to do without shrieking melodrama. It is a well trodden story (decent man in 30s Germany lured into the Nazi regime through moral cowardice and inaction) but it stands up. It's a hell of a lot better than "The Boy With the Striped Pajamas" - which also had a predominantly British cast playing Germans. It's strange that Viggo Mortensen is the odd one out in this cast, but does a fine job, all nervous ticks and quiet desperation, and there's great support from Jason Isaacs, Steven Mackintosh, Jodie Whittaker, Mark Strong and especially Gemma Jones as Halder's ailing elderly mother; she's stunning. Not a classic of the genre, but with a cast this strong on form it's definitely worth a look. 11 years 7 months ago
