A movie with great potential, but tonally inconsistent. It felt like a student film with a big budget. But Ruter Hauer was GREAT! He definitely put everyone else's acting skills to shame.

With better manuscript and direction, this could have been really good. Now I only wanted to see it because it was said to be bloodier than "Machete". Somewhat strange and some illogical things the characters made annoyed me.

"A long time ago I was one of you. You're all brand new and perfect. No mistakes, no regrets. People look at you and think of how wonderful your future will be. They want you to be something special... like a... a doctor or a lawyer. I hate to tell you this, but if you grow up here, you're more likely to wind up selling your bodies on the streets, or shooting dope from dirty needles in a bus stop. And if you're successful, you'll make money selling junk to crackheads. And you won't think twice about killing someone's wife, because you won't even know what was wrong in the first place. Or, maybe... you'll end up like me - a hobo with a shotgun! I hope you can do better. You are the future."

I think it's a problem for this film that Rutger Hauer is a good actor, he brings gravitas to the role. This does not sit will with some of the violence, some of the scenes that are supposed to be nasty (such as the school bus) end up being loathsome instead.
Should have had Brian Downey as the hobo, and Dieter Laser as Drake!

Hated this. Absolutely worthless. Among the worst films I've seen in 2011. Shame considering how much I admire the director's shorts.

Remember the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse films? Hobo with a Shotgun was one of the fake trailers shown as part of that package. Well, like Machete, it was then turned into a full-blown grindhouse movie, respecting many scenes and pieces of dialog, but recast with Rutger Hauer in the title role. This crazy gorefest shot in the Halifax, Nova Scotia area, has a cool Technicolor, 70s-80s feel to it, though it is clearly on steroids in a way, say, the Deathwish films, never were. Perhaps inspired by Frank Miller's Sin City, it features a transient walking into "Scum Town" (formerly "Hope Town") and disgusted by what is either a hive of villainy or the Hellmouth itself, takes it upon himself to kill, kill, kill, his only ally, you guessed it, a hooker with a heart of gold. Hauer gives the story some gravitas, but the villains are way over the top and deserve all the bad things that happen to them. The shocks are strictly for laughs, but the comedy is black indeed. Fun, if ultimately a little tiring in the relentlessness of the violence.

Seriously good fun. Without Rutger it could easily have been mediocre, he elevates it to awesome territory.

Great stuff! I thought Machete was funnier, but HWAS was definitely sicker and more faithful to that shitty 80s neon-lit, synth soundtracked, badly acted heyday of exploitation. Pretty brilliant really.

Down to a tee what I was expecting from this. Tones of fake looking gore, obtuse and grotesque black humour, over the top characters and without doubt the most hilarious film I've seen this year.
