Fantastic, inspired-by-true-events WWII drama by Roberto Rossellini starring Vittorio De Sica, in what many consider his greatest performance, as the opportunistic conman Bardone. Landing up in prison he is persuaded to impersonate the partisan Italian general of the title to uncover the captured head of the resistance. Rossellini expertly negotiates a moral maze for Bardone, desperate to save his own skin yet increasingly hesitant to betray his fellow prisoners to his equally cunning protector Colonel Muller (a great complementary performance from Hannes Messemer). With a powerful message of moral transformation and courage it deserves a place alongside Rossellini's earlier similarly themed trilogy as one of the best films of the war genre and Italian cinema - it rightly won the Venice Golden Lion. 11 years 9 months ago -
