Following "About A Boy", this film and the former represent the one-two-punch high point of Paul Weitz's directorial ouvre, thus far. In Good Company is a highly underrated film, full of wonderful performances and sharp dialogue. What keeps it from notoriety is a decidedly low key atomspehere. Not prone to histrionics, most of the characters are fairly ordinary and humane. It's a simple and heartfelt tale with likeable people at the center.
Strangely, barely fifteen years on from it's release, it already feels like a film that wouldn't be made today. Far too even handed and empathetic about human nature (particularly surrounding corporate culture) to fit in with the current tendency toward the polemic. Not to mention the fact that the central romantic relationship, despite it's warmth and honesty (as well as Scarlett and Topher's great chemistry), would be the target of screeds against it's lack of demonization.
Also of note is some delicious scenery chewing from Clark Gregg and a sterling soundtrack. 3 years 10 months ago
