There are animated Disney movies that are worse, but I don't think there are any that are more shoddily written.

This underrated and forgotten Disney movie reminds me of The Legend of Zelda and Lord of the Rings. It is dark for a children's film, but not as bad as many make it.

It lacks a lot on the backstory. The villain would like to take over the world, but what kind of world are we talking about ?. Who are the three witches and the Princess, Princess of what? I also believe that witches said that only a man can destroy the black cauldron ... Witches also says that it is impossible to bring the dead back to life. btw, Gurgi reminds me of Gollum from lord of the rings

Not that great IMHO. It's one of those "and then this happened" movies. After a decent intro and first act that introduces the stakes and main character, the "quest" part of the adventure just sort of meanders from one set piece to another without much sense of progression. What happens in one scene rarely seems to effect what happens in the next. The animation also looks kinda cheap at times, with background inconsistencies and crude, thick lines on animated sections. This really was a period when Disney was starting to let quality slip.

Not bad, but not good, either. It is the absolute definition of animated cinematic mediocrity.

I've actually read the first three books in the series this movie was based on. The movie was an extremely simplified and "kiddified" version, there are far too many characters left out, and the ones that were included had their backgrounds altered or removed (mostly the later, since no one has any background in the movie, really).

But it's still an enjoyable movie, IMO, if considered as its own thing.
