Deborah Ellis' The Breadwinner comes to animated life in the Oscar-nominated film about a young girl in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan who must dress up as a boy if her family is to survive after her father is jailed by the authorities. It's an important portrait of Muslim women from that part of the world, sensitively portrayed, one that uses its protagonist's two lives to show crushing disparity between the sexes. One feels that Parvana having tasted male freedom, it wouldn't be so easy for her to go back. One element I sometimes find lacking in animated films but present here is that the emotions projected by the various characters are complex, like live action performances. Nothing needs be over-explained. And thanks to the mytho-personal story Parvana tells - in fun cut-out puppet animation style - The Breadwinner is not devoid of humor despite its heavy subject matter.ntan
Oh my.I went into this knowing it would be an awards season contender. I mean, it's from Cartoon Saloon, who received acclaim for The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea.
But I did not expect... that. I was absolutely blown away.
There are several moments that I felt were not suitable for kids, it being animated and all, but were necessary for the story. I mean,
There is a subplot here, a sort of parallel story, that at first seems unrelated, but ties in so beautifully to the main story.
My one issue is the ending. Sometimes ambiguous or open endings are necessary and are the right fit for the story trying to be told. This was not one of those times. The ending needed to be wrapped up nicer.
This is the second best animated film of the year, behind Coco. 4.5/5

This movie is both confronting and sad, yet it has a profound impact.KaphAein

A catalytic and courageous character in Parvana. Aside from the war-torn family drama where she keeps the family going, theres also a poignant theme of telling one’s family story (in the embedded fairy tale) that really surfaces the heart of the movie in a way kids will resonate with as much as adults.Esnaider
Around this time of the year, I always end up watching a movie nominated for the Academy Awards that deals with this same subject of how women in some middle eastern nations get treated. This year I wasn't expecting that movie to be animated, and so beautifully too, that's why just because of the social relevance, The Breadwinner should win the award, even if is not as great as Coco, just for its message needing to be heard, or well at least just the nomination counts I guess.

What a despicable approach to life all in the name of a skewed version of a religion and maintaining male dominance. There is nothing beautiful about the content however the animation was good.
