A cursory but somewhat serviceable version of Tolkien's book. The pace, voice acting and musical backing are unfortunately a huge detriment to making this an enjoyable film.

A good introduction to the story, especially for children. I am looking forward to the new Peter Jackson versions.

Well the oddity is how there's suddenly a prominent female character in the Jackson version, isn't it?

Having seen the epic, overblown 9-hour giga blockbuster trilogy before, it's almost cute to see this innocent little kids version subsequently with a little more than 70 minutes runtime. There's some naive charme to the doddery character designs, especially Bilbo himself, although the figures don't nearly look as hideous as in Bakshi's insulting Lord of The Rings version from 1978. The backgrounds also look bonnily atmospheric here and I actually liked the vibes of the many 70s folk rock tunes. Maybe it's another not very Tolkienesk adaptation of the source material; but, in its datedness, a jovial one.

Funny to compare some of the scenes here directly to the 2012-14 ones; the barrel getaway has like 2 shots in 20 seconds opposed to Jackson's excessive 15-minute chase scene, haha.

PS: Beware! The common streamed Web-DL version has many sound effects & ambience removed, Heaven knows why. You may stick to the original audio, although the quality sadly is quite shabby (with a still very good picture). Do yourself a comparison in scenes with music/singing going on and how rain drops, sword noises and so on are gone. Meh!

Definitely better than the Peter Jackson movies.

Odd that there is not a single female character in the whole movie. As far as I remember that's how the book goes, though.
