Beautiful to look at but the weak script leave the revelations and plot twists unfulfilling.

The director seems at a loss as to how he should handle the material. It obviously calls for a visceral disturbing tone of the sort that was being pioneered in the US by Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, but instead goes for the stately British gothic of the Hammer Horrors. An example of how being beholden to Hammer's success limited the advancement of the British horror, and would ultimately put an end to Hammer itself. That's not to say the film is without merit; it has good acting, and sometimes manages some creepy scenes and a sense of dread. The ending is laughable, though.

Pamela Franklin is beyond beautiful in this one.

This is great until the ending. It is absolutely silly and undermines a fairly creepy and cool ghost film.

Saying that this film is not Rosemary's Baby is robbing it for the strong qualities it does have. The story of a haunted house is not very original, but this one was really one of the best of them. It is a bit like The Stone Tape without that film's shortcomings. Top notch performances, all characters are justified and complement each other, fantastic score, and the ending was good too. Will be checking out more from John Hough.

Roddy McDowall is great in this one. As was said, the ending is a little odd, but it's a strong film.
